{"id":187791,"date":"2026-04-06T23:38:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T23:38:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/187791\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T23:38:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T23:38:16","slug":"nyc-car-free-earth-day-returns-this-month-with-open-streets-citywide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/187791\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC Car-Free Earth Day Returns This Month With Open Streets Citywide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK CITY \u2014 The city\u2019s Department of Transportation annual Car-Free Earth Day returns this month with dozens of streets citywide will turn into public pedestrians plazas. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"26844973-1775506945\" data-image=\"26844973-1775506945\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/car-free-earth-day-2025-03.jpg\" data- \/> <\/p>\n<p> The annual event, to be held on April 25, promotes activism and education surrounding climate change, environmentalism, and sustainable modes of transportation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCar-Free Earth Day is a reminder that we only have one planet\u2014and that our streets play a critical role in our fight against climate change,\u201d NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn said. \u201cTransportation is the second-biggest source of carbon emissions in New York City, and finding ways to make clean transportation options quicker, easier, and more affordable is key. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"26844973-1775506971\" data-image=\"26844973-1775506971\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/car-free-earth-day-2025-02.jpg\" data- \/> <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We encourage all New Yorkers to come out to enjoy temporary public art, programming, music, and other activities at dozens of car-free streets around New York City.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through the support of Lyft, on Car-Free Earth Day, Citi Bike will offer unlimited 30-minute rides on a classic Citi Bike for 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>First launched in 2016, Car-Free Earth Day originally converted select Manhattan streets into public plazas and car-free streets for pedestrians, cyclists, and local businesses. Since then, it has expanded to locations throughout the five boroughs \u2013 connecting Open Streets, plazas, and accessing over 1,000 miles of NYC&#8217;s Bike Network. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"26844973-1775506992\" data-image=\"26844973-1775506992\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/car-free-earth-day-2025-01.JPG\" data- \/> <\/p>\n<p>Signature event locations include: <\/p>\n<p>Manhattan:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Broadway: 17th Street to 46th Street<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 St. Nicholas Avenue: 181st Street to 185th Street<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Dyckman Street: Broadway to La Marina\/Inwood Hill Park<\/p>\n<p>Queens:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Woodside Avenue: 75th Street to 78th Street<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Fifth Avenue: 41st Street to 45th Street<\/p>\n<p>The Bronx:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 East 188th Street: Grand Concourse to Valentine Avenue<\/p>\n<p>Staten Island:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Port Richmond Avenue: Castleton Avenue to Bennett Street<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the popular NYC Art Stop Letters will come to Car-Free Earth Day with an original design by NYC-based illustrator Molly Magnell, showcasing springtime in a car-free urban utopia.<\/p>\n<p>NYC DOT Art will also present two sculptural installations at Car-Free Earth Day.
