{"id":187801,"date":"2026-04-06T23:44:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T23:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/187801\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T23:44:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T23:44:12","slug":"state-says-hudson-river-fish-is-safe-to-eat-after-50-years-but-new-yorkers-arent-biting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/187801\/","title":{"rendered":"State says Hudson River fish is safe to eat after 50 years \u2014 but New Yorkers aren&#8217;t biting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This menu sounds a bit fishy.<\/p>\n<p>The state announced it\u2019s now safe to eat some seafood caught in the murky Hudson River \u2014 but locals aren\u2019t ready to throw a fish fry just yet.<\/p>\n<p>Department of Health officials said last week that it\u2019s OK for the general population to nosh on some fish caught in the pollution-plagued waterway for the first time in 50 years, with mouthwatering options for dinner including wild goldfish, succulent black crappie and delicious Big Apple-style brown bullhead.<\/p>\n<p>Still, New Yorkers told The Post in Battery Park they\u2019re scared Hudson \u201csurf and turf\u201d could end up a \u201csurf and turd\u201d despite lower levels of toxins found in local wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>New York anglers and their families can eat \u201csome\u201d fish caught in the Hudson River for the first time in 50 years, state health officials announced Wednesday. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Hudson already is one step above a sewer,\u201d huffed Manhattan finance worker John Hummler.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cWe are a modern society, and we already have sources of food,\u201d Hummler, 68, added. \u201cSo why eat the remaining wildlife that we have? Just because you decide you don\u2019t want to pay for fish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some fish, like smallmouth bass, remain off limits under the state\u2019s updated guidance \u2014 which also advises diners to limit intake of the local fish to four times a month. The guidance applies to seafood caught from the Battery up to Catskill.<\/p>\n<p>Analiese Colon said the idea of fishing off Manhattan is \u201coff-putting\u201d compared to her hometown in Suffolk County, Long Island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe water on Long Island, where we\u2019re from, is very, very clean and clear. You can see everything you\u2019re looking for,\u201d Colon, 23, said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s \u201ca little gross,\u201d observed 23-year-old Ethan Cohen near Pier 25 at Battery Park, \u201cbut if people want to eat it, it\u2019s their decision \u2026 Eat at your own risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Striped bass and yellow perch can now be caught and eaten from the Hudson River in New York City. New York State Department of Health<\/p>\n<p>And there remain some risks, according to the state.<\/p>\n<p>People under 50 who can become pregnant and children under 15 are recommended to eat just one 8-ounce meal per month due to increased contamination risks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great day when the Department can relax guidance for certain fish in the lower Hudson River, allowing people who may become pregnant and children to eat fish from one of the most important fisheries in New York State,\u201d State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of risk level, eager pescatarians are urged to slow consumption of big catches, as smaller fish usually have fewer chemicals than older fish of the same species, state reps said.<\/p>\n<p>Health officials also urge anglers to cut the skin and fat off the fish and cook it, as PCBs stay in the fat of the fish.<\/p>\n<p>The updated guidance comes as lower levels of toxic polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, were detected in several fish species, state health officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Those consuming Hudson River crabs should remove the tomalley and discard the cooking liquid.<\/p>\n<p>Health officials urge anglers to cut the skin and fat off the fish and cook it, as PCBs stay in the fat of the fish.
