NEW YORK, NY \u2014 City officials will centralize control of curb space across more than 6,000 miles of streets under a newly created Office of Curb Management, an effort aimed at reducing congestion, organizing street use and improving safety.<\/p>\n
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and commissioner Mike Flynn, of the NYC Department of Transportation, announced that the office will oversee policies governing roughly 3 million parking spaces and coordinate how curb lanes are used for deliveries, outdoor dining, bike parking and waste containerization.<\/p>\n
The office will expand loading zones, designate pickup and drop-off areas and promote faster turnover at the curb, officials announced. <\/p>\n
It will also streamline coordination among city agencies on projects that depend on curb access.<\/p>\n
Flynn said existing rules have not kept pace with changes in how streets function.<\/p>\n
\u201cNew York City\u2019s curb regulations have not evolved quickly enough since 1950,\u201d he said. \u201cThe result is a curb that too often feels chaotic and unsafe, and that must change.\u201d<\/p>\n
Officials said the new office will consolidate staff and planning functions currently spread across multiple teams, creating a single, citywide approach to curb design and policy.<\/p>\n
