Georgiy Abdurahmanov recently gave Staten Islander Susan Cangely some good news. She’s going to get back more than $1,300 this year.<\/p>\n
“I almost fell off the chair,\u201d Cangely said. \u201cI’m getting back like five times more than what I got back last year?”\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI’m going to pay back bills and maybe be able to catch up a little bit,” she added.<\/p>\n

Abdurahmanov recently graduated with a degree in accounting and is hoping to work at a nonprofit organization<\/p>\n
It was another day of volunteering for Abdurahmanov, who is a tax preparer at Project Hospitality on Staten Island.<\/p>\n
“I’m just happy that I did it and that’s how it came out,\u201d Abdurahmanov said. “And now I’m just hoping that review goes by.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
“You have people coming in with, like, $19,000, adjusted gross income that’s, you know, and then you get them a refund, that’s, a total of $5,000 that, you know, that’s going to help them,” he added.<\/p>\n
The Richmond resident found accounting in college. He was handling financials for his student club, Engineers Without Borders \u2014 and he was enjoying it.<\/p>\n
“Anytime I spoke to someone about it, they were like ‘George, you’re describing accounting work. You’re describing cost management. You’re describing depreciation of things,'” he said.<\/p>\n
Eager to get hands-on experience in the field, Abdurahmanov became a volunteer tax preparer. He is now at Project Hospitality three times a week to prepare returns.<\/p>\n
Abdurahmanov is typically the first of two preparers to work on client paperwork. He has helped more than 100 clients this year alone.<\/p>\n
“Getting someone a refund that’s almost a tenth or, like, a fifth of what they earned throughout the year feels incredible,” Abdurahmanov said.<\/p>\n
Abdurahmanov graduated with his bachelor’s in accounting in January. He is now hoping to become an accountant for a nonprofit organization.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“It’s the thing I think most people, they want to, help make the world a better place,\u201d Abdurahmanov said. \u201cI fall into that camp.”<\/p>\n
