We are excited to announce that Jeremy White has been promoted to senior staff editor for visual innovation.<\/p>\n
Jeremy has a long history of working at the intersection of reporting, design and engineering, and his contributions to visual journalism at The Times since he joined in 2010 are vast. They include visualizing the sun exposure of every inch of New York City<\/a> using remote sensing technology; inventing a way to scroll through video<\/a> for a tour of Hudson Yards; using A.I. to generate dozens of fake faces<\/a> years before Dall-E went mainstream; joining disparate data sets to show how the Gulf Stream moves<\/a> below the ocean\u2019s surface; building a thermal camera to capture extreme heat<\/a>\u2019s physical effects; and writing a 3D library from scratch to visualize the shockwave generated by a firearm<\/a>. Jeremy\u2019s work has earned many awards, including a Peabody and top honors from the Society for News Design.\u00a0<\/p>\n The ripple effects of Jeremy\u2019s industry-leading work extend far beyond his stories. He compiled his scrolling video code into a library that has been used by graphics editors across multiple departments to publish many of our highest-impact visual stories. A utility that he developed became a workhorse tool in the department for processing massive amounts of geospatial data to make maps.<\/p>\n In his new role, Jeremy will drive experiments in storytelling techniques and visual forms, with a particular focus on mobile presentation. He will develop technologies that allow us to deliver complex animations and visualizations seamlessly to The Times\u2019s audience. He will also work with the A.I. Initiatives team to explore emerging tools and techniques that could strengthen how our graphics editors report and produce journalism. Jeremy will continue to be a collaborator and partner for colleagues across the newsroom who are eager to test new ideas, push forward native web technologies and build the next generation of interactive experiences for our readers.<\/p>\n Originally from Oregon, Jeremy interned at The Times before joining the staff in 2010.
