<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the answer is yes (<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/03\/us-news\/family-of-slain-2011-hero-nypd-cop-say-they-feel-diller-widows-pain-justice-falls-short\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cUniform pain of slain cops\u2019 kin,\u201d <\/a>April 4).<\/p>\n<p>The only way to overcome this stupidity is for the Legislature to pass laws that provide a life sentence without parole when a cop is murdered on duty. <\/p>\n<p>But that won\u2019t happen; lefty legislators in Albany only care about what taxes they can levy on us.<\/p>\n<p>Niles Welikson<\/p>\n<p>Williston Park<\/p>\n<p>NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller did not deserve to die. <\/p>\n<p>He deserves his honors. <\/p>\n<p>But we all deserve the truth; determining that is what the jury is responsible for, even if that verdict is unpopular.<\/p>\n<p>The jurors did their job; their honest service is what we hope for in every trial, even if we don\u2019t like the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Katherine Meeks<\/p>\n<p>Manhattan<\/p>\n<p>The Diller verdict \u2014 right or wrong \u2014 clarifies the flaws in the different degrees of homicide in New York law.<\/p>\n<p>First-degree murder requires intent to kill, which, without evidence of a premeditated plan, is difficult to prove. <\/p>\n<p>A plan wasn\u2019t present in this case, but Rivera fought to retain his weapon, which proves an intention to use it and which should allow the judge to sentence him to life imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Carhidi<\/p>\n<p>Manhattan<\/p>\n<p>I commend Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch for condemning the acquittal of Rivera for first-degree murder (<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/02\/opinion\/verdict-in-killing-of-nypd-hero-cop-jonathan-diller-gut-punch-commissioner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cGut Punch to NYPD Morale,\u201d <\/a>Jessica Tisch, April 3).<\/p>\n<p>I realize the jurors may have been deluded by the sleazy tactics used by defense lawyer Jamal Johnson, who inexplicably tried to portray Rivera as a victim. <\/p>\n<p>However, I wish that they could have seen through Johnson\u2019s lies.<\/p>\n<p>John Fox<\/p>\n<p>Sunnyside<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if the verdict would have been different if the perpetrator was white and the victim black.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, this verdict is the result of jurors who had an agenda of their own.<\/p>\n<p>The judge should overturn this verdict and reassure the NYPD that justice will always prevail.<\/p>\n<p>Colette Curry<\/p>\n<p>Staten Island<\/p>\n<p>Is it a shock for a NYC jury to have acquitted a cop-killer of first-degree murder?
