However, a strong odor of gas drew several emergency service units and Con Edison to the scene where they were seen working for a few hours to evacuate the affected streets and order the closure of some local businesses while they sealed the rupture, hampering regular lunch trade.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the FDNY said they received a call at 11.36 a.m. on Tuesday for a report of a hi-pressure gas main that had been struck at 189 West 231st Street (Dale Diner), located between Broadway and the Deegan Expressway, close to Albany Crescent.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The spokesperson said 21 units, comprising 79 fire and EMS personnel utilized to respond to the scene. Con Ed and the NYPD were also seen at the site, as two blocks on West 231st Street between Broadway and Bailey Avenue were sealed off to vehicular and foot traffic. The subway continued running at 231st Street.<\/p>\n The FDNY said the incident was closed at 1.07 p.m. and a worker informed Norwood News at the scene that the rupture had been sealed, though\u00a0 operations were still ongoing until at least 2.05 p.m., after the westbound lane of 231st was reopened for pedestrians only. Vehicular traffic was later allowed on one lane of the block between Bailey Avenue and Albany Crescent but remained closed to vehicular traffic between Albany Crescent and Broadway at least until around 2\u00a0p.m.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The odor of gas was still present at that point but had subsided somewhat. Several small businesses and a supermarket located on the block were affected by the fact that the gas supply had been turned off during the lunch rush hour.<\/p>\n Norwood News later spoke to one worker in a general store located on the block who said she and her colleagues did not evacuate but remained inside and had put on masks. Another worker in a tax services office nearby said he also stayed inside the business and did not evacuate. We asked if there had been an explosion and the man said not to his knowledge.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n We also spoke to a manager at Dale Diner, who declined to be identified. The diner was all but empty when we arrived, and we asked him if he could describe what happened. Speaking in Spanish, he said, \u201cThe people got a fright [when they realized there was a smell of gas]. He added that the FDNY told him they had to close. He said people only remained in the rear section of the diner away from the street entrance.<\/p>\n Asked if Dale Diner had called the FDNY, the manager said they had not. Asked if it was a problem with the gas system at the diner, given that was the address shared by FDNY about the incident, he said it was not but added that the gas supply to the diner had been cut off nonetheless while Con Ed and the FDNY investigated the issue.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Emergency services had opened up a hole on the other side of the street across from the diner and were seen working on the piping there.<\/p>\n Asked what happened with his customers once the gas was shut off, the manager of Dale Diner said they couldn\u2019t continue the lunch service. Asked if the customers paid before being evacuated, he said they did adding that some orders had to be cancelled. Asked what percentage of the regular lunch business he lost as a result of the issue, he estimated 80%.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, a local laundromat owner was seen placing a notice on his door advising patrons that they too had to close. Asked what happened earlier, he said some customers had to evacuate, leaving their clothes inside the washing machines but came back later to retrieve them.<\/p>\n The JASA older adult center located on the same block was also impacted. We spoke to John Ludvik, known as \u201cI John,\u201d who was standing outside the center and asked him what happened. \u201cI wasn\u2019t here,\u201d Ludvik said. \u201cI came down to play Bingo and then when I got here, I\u2019m ringing the bell, and nobody\u2019s answering and so I call them on the phone and before they picked up, I saw one of the members and she said \u2018No Bingo today \u2013 gas leak in the street.’\u201d<\/p>\n He continued, \u201cSo then Anna, who is the assistant manager, she picked up the phone and she\u2019s telling me, \u2018Earlier today, the whole center started filling with gas, and so they had to close the place. Everybody had to go and then they called the fire department. They called Con Edison. They called everybody but they didn\u2019t know where the gas was coming from, so as I\u2019m standing here, somebody, must have been the gas company, somebody said a pipe had ruptured.\u201d<\/p>\n \nGas rupture after gas mains struck on 231St & Broadway, Kingsbridge, Bronx April 7, 2026 V2 Video by S\u00edle Moloney\n<\/p>\n \u00a0Later several people were seen accumulating at the corner of Bailey Avenue and West 231st Street waiting for the Bx10 bus which did not show up. When contacted, an MTA spokesperson said, \u201cDue to earlier gas rupture on W 231st & Broadway: \u201cBx10 buses are detoured in both directions due to a gas leak at Broadway\/W 231st St. Westbound buses will not serve stops from Bailey Ave\/W 233rd St to W 231st St\/Broadway. Eastbound buses will not serve stops from W 231st St\/Bailey Ave to Bailey Ave\/W 238th St. Stops will be made along Broadway in both directions.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Norwood News has contacted Con Ed to ask for further information about the gas incident after being referred to them by the FDNY when asked for the cause of the rupture. \u201cNot for us to determine. Con Ed\/National Grid on scene,\u201d an FDNY spokesperson said. \u201cWe closed the incident at 13.07 hrs and are taking up.\u201d We will share any further details we receive from Con Ed.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n As reported<\/a>, a residential building at 18 E 198th Street in Bedford Park was evacuated on Tuesday, March 31, after a suspected gas leak and residents said that they have been without heat and hot water due to the gas being shut off since around Sunday, March 29.
