Con Ed and the NYPD were also seen at the site, as two blocks on West 231st Street between Broadway and Bailey Avenue were sealed off to vehicular and foot traffic. Vehicular traffic was later allowed on one lane of the block between Bailey Avenue and Albany Crescent but remained closed to vehicular traffic between Albany Crescent and Broadway at least until around 2\u00a0p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The odor of gas was still present at that point but had subsided somewhat. Another worker in a tax services office nearby said he also stayed inside the business and did not evacuate. We asked if there had been an explosion and the man said not to his knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">We also spoke to a manager at Dale Diner, who declined to be identified. The diner was all but empty when we arrived, and we asked him if he could describe what happened. Speaking in Spanish, he said, \u201cThe people got a fright [when they realized there was a smell of gas]. He added that the FDNY told him they had to close. Asked if the customers paid before being evacuated, he said they did adding that some orders had to be cancelled. Asked what percentage of the regular lunch business he lost as a result of the issue, he estimated 80%.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">Meanwhile, a local laundromat owner was seen placing a notice on his door advising patrons that they too had to close. We spoke to John Ludvik, known as \u201cI John,\u201d who was standing outside the center and asked him what happened. \u201cI wasn\u2019t here,\u201d Ludvik said. \u201cI came down to play Bingo and then when I got here, I\u2019m ringing the bell, and nobody\u2019s answering and so I call them on the phone and before they picked up, I saw one of the members and she said \u2018No Bingo today \u2013 gas leak in the street.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">He continued, \u201cSo then Anna, who is the assistant manager, she picked up the phone and she\u2019s telling me, \u2018Earlier today, the whole center started filling with gas, and so they had to close the place. Everybody had to go and then they called the fire department. They called Con Edison. They called everybody but they didn\u2019t know where the gas was coming from, so as I\u2019m standing here, somebody, must have been the gas company, somebody said a pipe had ruptured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nGas rupture after gas mains struck on 231St &amp; Broadway, Kingsbridge, Bronx April 7, 2026 V2 Video by S\u00edle Moloney\n<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\">\u00a0Later several people were seen accumulating at the corner of Bailey Avenue and West 231st Street waiting for the Bx10 bus which did not show up. When contacted, an MTA spokesperson said, \u201cDue to earlier gas rupture on W 231st &amp; Broadway: \u201cBx10 buses are detoured in both directions due to a gas leak at Broadway\/W 231st St. Westbound buses will not serve stops from Bailey Ave\/W 233rd St to W 231st St\/Broadway. Eastbound buses will not serve stops from W 231st St\/Bailey Ave to Bailey Ave\/W 238th St. Stops will be made along Broadway in both directions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Norwood News has contacted Con Ed to ask for further information about the gas incident after being referred to them by the FDNY when asked for the cause of the rupture. \u201cNot for us to determine. Con Ed\/National Grid on scene,\u201d an FDNY spokesperson said. \u201cWe closed the incident at 13.07 hrs and are taking up.\u201d We will share any further details we receive from Con Ed.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/bedford-park-boiler-issue-and-suspected-gas-leak-causes-evacuation-at-18-east-198th-street\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>, a residential building at 18 E 198th Street in Bedford Park was evacuated on Tuesday, March 31, after a suspected gas leak and residents said that they have been without heat and hot water due to the gas being shut off since around Sunday, March 29.
