{"id":189040,"date":"2026-04-08T00:54:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T00:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/189040\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T00:54:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T00:54:13","slug":"suspects-who-allegedly-threw-explosives-outside-nyc-mayor-mamdanis-residence-indicted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/189040\/","title":{"rendered":"Suspects who allegedly threw explosives outside NYC Mayor Mamdani&#8217;s residence indicted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The suspects charged with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/gracie-mansion-protest-smoke-grenades\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">igniting homemade bombs outside Gracie Mansion<\/a>\u00a0last month were indicted Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, who are both from Pennsylvania,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/zohran-mamdani-gracie-mansion-ied-nypd-explosive-jessica-tisch\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">were arrested after the chaos unfolded on March 7<\/a> outside Mayor Zohran Mamdani&#8217;s residence.\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/federal-charged-filed-against-men-accused-of-bringing-explosives-to-protests-at-gracie-mansion\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Each are charged with five counts<\/a>, including attempted support to a designated foreign terrorist organization (ISIS), use of a weapon of mass destruction, and transportation of explosive materials, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/zohran-mamdani-gracie-mansion-ied-nypd-explosive-jessica-tisch\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">federal criminal complaint<\/a>.\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p>They have been in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fbi-investigation-terrorism-explosive-device-new-york-city-mayor-mamdani-gracie-mansion\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">federal custody<\/a> since the incident. Their arraignment has not yet been scheduled.<\/p>\n<p>IEDs found outside Gracie Mansion<\/p>\n<p>The incident happened when an anti-Islam protest and counterprotest called Run the Nazis Out of New York City\/Stand Against Hate drew more than 100 participants.<\/p>\n<p>NYPD responded to the scene and separated the groups, but tensions escalated, and an individual from the initial protest used pepper spray against the counter-protesters.<\/p>\n<p>Then, a counter-protester, identified as Balat, allegedly lit and threw an ignited device toward the crowd before running away and retrieving a second device from Kayumi. Testing revealed that one of the devices deployed contained triacetone triperoxide, known as TATP. As shown on NYPD body-worn camera footage referenced in the complaint, Kayumi responded with ISIS,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/video\/nypd-provides-update-on-protests-outside-gracie-mansion\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tisch said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both Balat and Kayumi  waived their Miranda rights. Balat also wrote a statement declaring his allegiance to the Islamic State, Tisch said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Balat] also told investigators that he hoped to carry out an attack even bigger than the Boston Marathon bombing, which he noted resulted in &#8216;only three deaths,'&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said, in part, that investigators &#8220;have uncovered evidence revealing the alleged meticulous planning by the defendants in their attack, including a notebook with detailed attack plans and a storage unit containing explosive residue and bomb-making materials.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\n          More from CBS News\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"content__tags__label\">In:<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The suspects charged with igniting homemade bombs outside Gracie Mansion\u00a0last month were indicted Tuesday.
