NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) \u2014 Three buildings linked to New York City\u2019s immigration history have now been immortalized as the city\u2019s newest landmarks.<\/p>\n
Public School 15 Annex at 372 Schermerhorn in Brooklyn, the Church of Saint Mary at 440 Grand Street on the Lower East Side and the Lithuanian Alliance Building at 307 West 30 St. in Chelsea are the newest designations by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.<\/p>\n
Stay connected with community stories that matter: Visit our homepage <\/a><\/p>\n The new landmarks are intended to reflect the \u201chistory of immigration in New York City and the diverse immigrant communities who have helped define and shape the city,\u201d according to the commission.<\/p>\n The Public School 15 Annex, built in 1889, served Brooklyn\u2019s growing immigrant community and later became home to the Girls\u2019 Continuation School for first- and second-generation Americans. The school became an influential place for young women of Lithuanian, Italian, Polish, Irish and Dutch heritage.<\/p>\n More Local News <\/a><\/p>\n The Church of Saint Mary is the oldest Roman Catholic religious institution on Manhattan\u2019s Lower East Side and was central to some of the earliest Irish Catholics in New York City. In recent years, it has remained a pillar for Catholic immigrants, especially those from Spanish-speaking countries.<\/p>\n The Lithuanian Alliance Building has served as the headquarters of the Lithuanian Alliance of America since 1910, a fraternal society established to support new immigrants.
