Jakhi McCray pleaded guilty in April 2026 to setting the blazes. <\/p>\n<p>Photo via U.S. District Court<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/amny.com\/brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Brooklyn<\/a> man on Wednesday pleaded guilty to setting 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.gov\/nypd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NYPD<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/police-fire\/arsonist-nypd-vehicles-brooklyn-arrested-feds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vehicles on fire in a Bushwick parking lot last year.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jakhi McCray turned himself in to police custody following the blaze on DeKalb Avenue between Wilson and Central Avenues in Bushwick and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/jahki-mccray-indictment.pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">charged<\/a> with a federal arson count. Law enforcement agents said McCray scaled the fence around the lot, which the NYPD uses to store vehicles, around 1 a.m. on June 12, 2025, and used fire starters to light up the cop cars \u2014 plus a trailer \u2014 causing $800,000 worth of damage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The charge carries a mandatory five-year minimum prison sentence and a maximum sentence of 20 years. McCray, 22, remains out on a $300,000 bond until his sentencing, which has not yet been scheduled.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McCray was previously arrested in connection with protests and charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. While law enforcement said he acted alone in setting the 2025 blaze, the incident took place a few days before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/politics\/no-kings-day-march-nyc-trump-06142025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">June 14, 2025, \u201cNo Kings\u201d protests in New York City<\/a>, sparking concern among law enforcement that security at the protests could be compromised, according to court documents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, around 20 supporters of McCray filled half the courtroom as he pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Seth Eichenholtz. Some wore T-shirts that said \u201cFree Jahki!\u201d and \u201cLove fights back.\u201d McCray, meanwhile, wore a gray T-shirt that said \u201cVive La Commune\u201d and a black medical face mask.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137773294\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/RMA-1501-25-Arson-83-Pct-06.12.25-photo-1-2.jpg\" alt=\"Alleged Brooklyn arson suspect\" width=\"553\" height=\"700\" title=\"Brooklyn activist pleads guilty to arson after setting fire to parked NYPD cars 2\"  \/>21-year-old Jakhi Lodgson-McCray stands trial for federal arson charges.NYPD<\/p>\n<p>After pleading guilty, McCray offered a brief allocution: \u201cOn June 12, 2025, I knowingly and intentionally set fire to NYPD vehicles in a parking lot in Brooklyn, New York, and I knew that the vehicles could be damaged.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Jacobson of the Federal Defenders of New York and the prominent defense attorney Ron Kuby represent McCray.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca Urquiola appeared on behalf of the government.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Nocella Jr., U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said McCray\u2019s actions \u201cwere not only dangerous, but they were also a direct attack on public safety and the rule of law.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy deliberately setting fire to multiple police vehicles in the pre-dawn hours, the defendant put at risk the lives of first responders and residents asleep in their beds nearby, and ultimately, strained resources meant to protect the community,\u201d Nocella said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Support Committee for Jakhi McCray, a group that describes itself as an \u201cindependent collective representing our own political expression in support of his defense,\u201d released a statement in the wake of his plea saying McCray\u2019s activism has \u201ctouched countless lives.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJakhi is supported by a broad base of comunity (sic) organizations in New York City and across the United States, with more than 21 organizations already signed on to a statement of support for him following the plea deal today.
