NEW YORK (PIX11) \u2014 Almost 100 days into leading New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s<\/a> approval rating among New Yorkers has held steady, even with concerns about the economy.<\/p>\n

Exclusive polling from PIX11, Emerson College and The Hill shows a net approval rating of +16% with 43% of New Yorkers approving of the job the mayor is doing, 30% are neutral on Mamdani and 27% disapprove.<\/p>\n

Just days into office, Mamdani announced a universal child care expansion<\/a> with Gov. Kathy Hochul. That landmark event, along with a constant focus on housing and cracking down on bad landlords<\/a>, shows in the polling.<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s net approval on child care is +33%. It is +24% on housing and +13% on policing and public safety. Nearly 60% of New Yorkers said that, in general, Mamdani is focusing on the issues important to them<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, Mamdani is only slightly above water at +3% on his handling of the city budget and a multi-billion-dollar deficit<\/a>.\u00a0He floated the idea of a property tax increase as a last resort<\/a>, if state lawmakers did not pass new taxes on millionaires and corporations.<\/p>\n

Polling shows that New Yorkers do generally support that idea, with 55% saying the state should raise taxes on the wealthy<\/a>.\u00a0However, 41% said the city needs to better manage its spending. \u00a0Very few people, 4% of those surveyed, support a property tax hike.<\/p>\n

The tax increase debate comes as many New Yorkers feel the city\u2019s economy is shaky<\/a>, with job growth stagnating.<\/p>\n

A majority of New Yorkers, 59%, feel the city is headed in the wrong direction<\/a>.\u00a0Moreover, the poll asked people to rate the city\u2019s economy: 40% of New Yorkers rate the economy as poor; 38% rate it as fair; only 16% say the city\u2019s economy is good, and 3% say it\u2019s excellent.<\/p>\n

New Yorkers were also asked to weigh the impact of a potential corporate tax increase<\/a>, which the mayor has been pushing.\u00a0Forty-four percent of people said it would not cause companies to leave the city<\/a>, but 30% were worried about jobs leaving, and 27% were unsure what the result of a corporate tax increase might be.<\/p>\n

However, 65% of those surveyed were more supportive of the mayor\u2019s plan to tax millionaires<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Finally, New Yorkers were asked to grade the mayor\u2019s response to the major winter storms<\/a> the city faced at the beginning of the year.\u00a0Of those polled, 29% gave him an A, 33% gave him a B, 18% gave him a C, 9% gave him a D, 11% gave him an F.<\/p>\n

The Emerson College Polling survey was conducted April 5-6, 2026. The overall sample of New York City registered voters, n=850, has a credibility interval, similar to a poll\u2019s margin of error (MOE), of +\/- 3.4 percent. The data sets were weighted by gender, education, race, age, party registration, and region based on U.S. Census parameters and voter file data.<\/p>\n
