CONCOURSE, Bronx (PIX11) \u2014 A former NYPD sergeant awaits sentencing Thursday in a deadly case that\u2019s stirred up deep emotions across New York City.<\/p>\n

Former NYPD Sergeant Erik Duran<\/a> will learn his fate for the death of 30-year-old Eric Duprey in 2023.<\/p>\n

In February, Duran was convicted of second-degree manslaughter after throwing a picnic cooler<\/a> that struck Duprey as he tried to flee on a scooter. The crash killed him.<\/p>\n

Duran faces anywhere from five to 15 years in state prison.<\/p>\n

The case sparked outrage across the Bronx and the rest of New York City. But what\u2019s dividing the city on Thursday morning are the calls on both sides.<\/p>\n

The police union gathered more than 11,000 signatures asking for no jail time at all.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Black Lives Matter Greater New York and the Duprey family are calling for the maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, saying anything less dishonors the man who died and the community still grieving him.<\/p>\n

A rally and press conference led by Black Lives Matter was scheduled for 8:30 a.m. ahead of the 9 a.m. court session.<\/p>\n
