(WHTM) \u2013 A majority of New York residents support a millionaire\u2019s tax on individuals earning more than $1 million a year, according to a new Emerson College Polling survey.<\/p>\n
The poll of New York City residents found that 65% support the tax or a 2% increase in city income tax on those earning seven figures. Fifty-five percent of residents say raising taxes on the wealthy would help close the city\u2019s budget gap, while 41% say the city should do a better job managing its spending.<\/p>\n
Only 4% said they believe a 5% property tax increase would be the best option to close the budget gap.<\/p>\n
City residents are also unsure, the poll found, of whether a corporate tax increase of 1-2% would cause companies to leave. Thirty percent of those surveyed said they believe it would lead to a loss in companies, while 27% were unsure, and 44% said they did not believe companies would leave.<\/p>\n
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also remains popular in the city after his first few months in office. Mamdani\u2019s approval was 43% in the poll, with 30% neutral and 27% disapproving of his job performance.<\/p>\n
Fifty-five percent of residents who voted in the 2025 election approve of Mamdani\u2019s performance. The mayor\u2019s childcare affordability plan is also popular, with 54% of residents approving.<\/p>\n
Despite the approval of Mamdani, residents overwhelmingly believe the city is headed in the wrong direction. Fifty-nine percent said they believe New York City is on the wrong track, while 41% said it was headed in the right direction.<\/p>\n
