The show tells a story of British might, resilience and creativity, and displays just how seriously the late monarch took her role and how proud she was of her country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe queen found her own style, creating a look that became instantly recognizable to a global audience,\u201d said Caroline de Guitaut, who curated the show. \u201cIn its elegance and idiosyncrasies, her style would inspire a generation of future fashion designers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring a walk-through of the show, which runs until Oct. 18, de Guitaut added that the queen developed her style through some of the most tumultuous decades in history, when change was happening at pace. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe late monarch came of age when the British court dressmaker gave way to French and British couturiers; she learned the importance of re-wearing well-made clothing during the lean war, and post-World War II, years, and she was a great supporter of British manufacturing, proud to fly the country\u2019s wool, tartan and tweed flags.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDe Guitaut also pointed out that Queen Elizabeth \u201ctook a deep and thoughtful interest in every aspect of her wardrobe, made her own decisions about her clothing and \u2014 most importantly \u2014 which designers, couturiers and suppliers she chose to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-wwd-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/QG_Queen_Elizabeth_LifeInStyle_QUICK_SELECTION_090426_16.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tThe \u201ccherry blossom\u201d dress, which Queen Elizabeth wore for a state visit to Japan in 1975, just one example of her diplomatic power dressing.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTodd-White Art Photography\/Ben F<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the last room of the show, which houses the queen\u2019s coronation gown and a rainbow of dresses from foreign trips and public events, there is a small caption that tells just how in-control she was when it came to getting dressed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDesigners would submit sketches, and she would mark them with a simple \u201cYes\u201d or \u201cNo.\u201d For approved designs, she added extra notes about sleeve length, silhouettes and hemlines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSoon after she appeared in the outfits, the queen\u2019s team would share the final sketches with the press, ensuring the details of her clothes, and the designers responsible, were accurately credited in the media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMore than 300 items\u00a0from the queen\u2019s wardrobe are on display in the\u00a0largest exhibition ever of her fashion. They include the queen\u2019s wedding necklaces\u00a0and\u00a0a newly displayed tiara\u00a0and childhood items, including a clutch of sweet cotton Liberty print dresses with matching bloomers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring the walk-through, de Guitaut also said the queen mastered the art of communication through clothing and worked particularly closely with her couturiers to relay her messages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cShe had an expert understanding of the way different fabrics would work in varying climatic conditions, and instantly understood how many pieces of day- and eveningwear were needed for the many overseas tours she undertook on behalf of government, whether they lasted days, weeks or even months,\u201d said de Guitaut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cHer clothes were always minutely considered, none more so than when undertaking official overseas tours. From the very beginning of her reign, the queen had an innate understanding of how fashion could lend itself to diplomacy. No matter which country or culture she visited, she offered a master class in diplomatic dressing that spoke volumes about her wish to connect to people and audiences,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe exhibition showcases so many vibrant examples, including the pistachio green Hartnell gown worn on a state visit to Ethiopia in 1965. The color was a nod to the country\u2019s flag.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnother Hartnell dress, in white and royal blue, had subtle maple leaves embroidered around the bodice. The queen wore it in 1967 for the centennial of the Confederation of Canada in Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt was the second \u201cmaple leaf\u201d dress that Hartnell made for her. The matching hat was designed to resemble a turban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAmong the other highlights in this superb show are the looks from the 1960s \u2014 lots of snappy A-line, color-blocked dresses and coats. Outfits from the 1970s \u2014 caftans, trippy colors, colorful beaded necklines and long, flowy dresses (that were really trousers) \u2014 show how much fun the queen could have dressing up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe had the same attitude to hats. There are more than 50 of them on display in a case that runs the length of an entire wall. They range from turbans and berets of the 1960s and 1970s, to sculptural \u201cflying saucers\u201d of the 1980s and 1990s, underlining the late monarch\u2019s \u201csurprisingly experimental approach to millinery,\u201d de Guitaut said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAccessories play a starring role.
