{"id":191607,"date":"2026-04-10T01:06:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T01:06:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/191607\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T01:06:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T01:06:29","slug":"nyu-professors-ratify-their-first-union-contract-after-march-walkout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/191607\/","title":{"rendered":"NYU professors ratify their first union contract after March walkout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<img width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/NYU-getty.jpg\" class=\"crop-center wp-post-image\" alt=\"exterior of NYU campus\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"   title=\"NYU professors ratify their first union contract after March walkout 1\"\/>\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for NYU said the school has made multiple offers that would put union members in an advantageous position.<\/p>\n<p>Photo via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>NYU professors who went on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/education\/nyu-faculty-threaten-strike-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">strike last month<\/a> formally announced on Wednesday that, after years of negotiating, they have finally reached their first union contract with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">school\u2019s administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/nyu-strike-suspended-tentative-agreement-made\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">contract<\/a> for the nearly 1,000 professors, all of whom are members of Contract Faculty United \u2013 UAW (CFU-UAW), includes protections for academic freedom and job security, new benefits including a $200,000-per-year fund for immigration expenses and an optional retirement buyout, and \u201cbest-in-the-nation\u201d pay, including an average raise of 20%.<\/p>\n<p>The contract also gives full-time, non-tenure-track faculty the right to grieve violations of their academic freedom to a neutral third-party arbitrator, the CFU-UAW said in a statement.\n<\/p>\n<p>Union members voted 756 to 13 \u2014 a 98% yes vote, with a turnout of 81% \u2014 to ratify the contract, which was tentatively agreed to after hundreds of full-time non-tenure-track educators went on a 39-hour strike that started on March 23.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy winning job security and strengthening academic freedom, we have strengthened the university and its mission,\u201d Heidi White, a professor in NYU\u2019s Liberal Studies program and an elected member of the bargaining committee, said. \u201cAnd by winning raises and protecting and improving our benefits, we won compensation that now reflects our service to the university community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The full-time faculty unionized in February 2024. Two years later, the union voted 90% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/education\/nyu-professors-vote-strike-02232026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">in favor of a walkout<\/a> on Feb. 23, 2026, after contract negotiations with school leadership reached a stalemate.
