Strap in as spring amphibian migration starts in New York City.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">MANHATTAN, N.Y. \u2013 <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York<\/a> can be full of wondrous animals in public parks found in the city, but there are also unexpectedly tiny, slimy creatures in the Big Apple.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/new-york-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York City<\/a> is well known for its large rats, but some people may not know that there is a salamander habitat in Highbridge Park.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In fact, there are 18 species of <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/animals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">salamanders<\/a> in New York state, as these animals are often found in aquatic environments such as streams and lakes.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/lifestyle\/spring-sting-florida-beach-how-portuguese-jellyfish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">SPRING STING: PORTUGUESE MAN O&#8217; WAR RETURNS TO GULF COAST BEACHES<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Despite this, 10 of the 18 species prefer habitats in woodlands and temporary ponds, spending most of the year far from water, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-481180195.jpg\" alt=\"Staff Photo by Fred J.
