\u00a0<\/p>\n
As reported<\/a>, police said that on Sunday morning at around 2.50 a.m., officers from the 50th Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding an assault at the intersection of West 242nd Street and Broadway, the site of the 242nd Street subway station and roughly adjacent to a section of Van Cortlandt Park where the the Van Cortlandt Park public swimming pool is located.<\/p>\n \u201cUpon arrival, officers observed a 35-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the knee, and a 44-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the chest,\u201d a police spokesperson said. \u201cEMS responded and transported the 44-year-old male to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced deceased and the 35-year-old male to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Police said there were no arrests at this time, and that the investigation was ongoing. The deceased was identified as Keon Gill, 44, of Middletown, NY.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n As reported<\/a>, on March 3, pursuant to an ongoing investigation, police said Naya Brown, a 26-year-old female (no address provided) was arrested and was charged with murder the same day at 7.55 a.m. in the confines of the 50th Precinct, which covers the neighborhoods of Kingsbridge, Riverdale, Mosholu, Fieldston, Spuyten Duyvil, and Marble Hill.<\/p>\n In a separate police report, the NYPD disclosed that an off-duty, 26-year-old, NYC Department of Education employee had been arrested and charged with murder on March 3 in the confines of the 50th Precinct and they named Brown as the employee.<\/p>\n Police also said that Pernell Warren, 37, of Bedford Park had been arrested on Feb. 1, at 9.45 p.m. in the confines of the 50th Precinct. They said he was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. Both Warren and Brown are deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Norwood News has reached out to the DOE to ask what position Brown held within the department and also to ask if the department had any comment. A DOE spokesperson said, \u201cNYC Public Schools takes all matters involving employee conduct\u00a0extremely\u00a0seriously. The alleged\u00a0behavior is deeply disturbing, and upon learning of these allegations,\u00a0this individual was immediately suspended.\u00a0If the allegations\u00a0are confirmed, we will pursue termination.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n We were informed that Brown is employed as a community coordinator and has worked with the agency since 2022.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n On Thursday, April 8, police said that pursuant to an ongoing investigation, Daniel Ligon, 39, of Middletown, NY was arrested and charged the same day at 7.45 a.m. within the confines of the 50th Precinct, which covers Fieldston, where the incident occurred.\u00a0Ligon was charged with murder. All three people arrested are presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n When Norwood News visited the scene on Sunday, Jan. 25, many stores \/ businesses were closed due to the heavy snowfall and police appeared to have already wrapped up their investigation. We asked the NYPD if the shooting had taken place on the Park side or on the opposite side of Broadway and did not receive a response.<\/p>\n Heavy snowfall had fallen overnight on the night of the incident and it was possible this may have hampered the ballistics investigation by police.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n An employee at a local liquor store said the store had closed around midnight and another smoke shop employee said the store closed at around the same time on Saturday night. Neither worker knew anything about the shooting. The female employee at the smoke shop said, \u201cIt\u2019s crazy that this has happened right here! I don\u2019t know anything about it but I\u2019m praying for the family. That\u2019s insane!\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Alfredo from local restaurant, Estrellita Poblana, located on the same block said he had closed around 11 p.m. the night before. Asked if he had noticed anyone arguing or getting hostile, he said he had not. He said it was generally a quiet area apart from when he said, occasionally, undomiciled people came across from the park to the restaurant and asked for money or food.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \nTHE SCENE AT Broadway & 242nd Street the day after a double shooting in Fieldston 1\/25\/26 Part II. Video by Norwood News\n<\/p>\n We also asked a few other residents of the area if they had any knowledge of the incident and not many did but one resident who lives on the 6th floor of a building overlooking the subway station later told us that she heard the gunshots when she awoke in the middle of the night with her son. \u201cI heard like this bang. I woke up to that. I thought it was a dream,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd then I heard it two more times so I think it was like three times in total.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The resident explained that the storefronts \/ roofs \/ awnings block her view of the street. Asked if she believes the gunshot sounds came from the Park side of Broadway or the side where the stores are located and she said the latter. She added that she believes the shooting took place exactly on the corner of 242nd Street and Broadway, outside a store that sells sports apparel.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n I went to check on my son because that was scary. My husband heard it as well. I said, \u2018What\u2019s that sound?\u2019 and he said, \u2018Well, that\u2019s definitely gunshots.’\u201d\u00a0She said she saw two or three people crossing the street \u201cfrom 242nd Street towards where the side [where] the train station entrance is.\u201d\u00a0 Asked if she could describe them, she explained that it was hard to see. \u201cEveryone was so bundled up honestly, it was very cold,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n She continued, \u201cMaybe 5-7 minutes later, I heard ambulances coming,\u201d she said. The resident added that it hadn\u2019t started to snow at that stage.
