{"id":191721,"date":"2026-04-10T03:29:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T03:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/191721\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T03:29:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T03:29:07","slug":"millions-of-spotted-lanternflies-could-plague-new-york-city-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/191721\/","title":{"rendered":"Millions of spotted lanternflies could plague New York City this year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"sub-text\">Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture spokesperson Shannon Powers on combating the invasive bug that is swarming across the U.S.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The annoying, now-annual hatching of spotted lanternflies is less than a month away, and experts warn there could be millions across <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/new-york-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York City<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to New York\u2019s Department of Agriculture, this past <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">winter<\/a> wasn\u2019t cold enough to reduce the insect\u2019s population. As a result, officials expect the species to surge again this season.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/lifestyle\/salamanders-manhattan-how-you-can-help-preserve-habitat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">SALAMANDERS IN MANHATTAN: HERE&#8217;S HOW YOU CAN HELP PRESERVE THEIR HABITAT<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;Predicting the spotted lanternfly population for the coming season is extremely difficult, as the research community continues to work on pinpointing what factors influence the population from year to year,&#8221; Jola Szubielzki, director of public information at the Department of Agriculture, said. &#8220;We do know that winter <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-forecast\/current-temperature-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">temperatures<\/a> downstate were not cold enough for long enough to kill off eggs that overwintered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-1641259328-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Three spotted lanternflies stand on a railing next to the Hudson River as the sun sets on the skyline of Lower Manhattan in New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\"> (Gary Hershorn\/Getty Images \/ Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The insect, that looks like a cross between a moth and a ladybug, is native to <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/asia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Asia<\/a> and was first discovered in the U.S. in <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/pennsylvania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pennsylvania<\/a> in 2014.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Now, the lanternfly has been spotted in more than 21 states, including <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York<\/a>, <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/new-jersey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New Jersey<\/a>, <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_10\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/connecticut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Connecticut<\/a>, <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_11\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Virginia<\/a> and <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_12\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ohio<\/a>, and has become a persistent nuisance in New York City each <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_13\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">summer<\/a> since 2020.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_14\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/spiders-size-human-hand-spreading-throughout-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">SPIDERS THE SIZE OF A HUMAN HAND ARE SPREADING THROUGHOUT THE US<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;Cities tend to have milder winters, creating favorable conditions for species that otherwise would only be able to live in warmer climates,&#8221; Kristen Winchell, an assistant professor of biology at New York University, said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gettyimages-2234262848-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">An infestation of spotted lanternflies in an adjacent wooded area at an offsite vineyard operated by Fabbioli Cellars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\"> (Graeme Sloan\/For The Washington Post via Getty Image \/ Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Officials say these bugs will continue to spread, especially as they continue to hitchhike by laying egg masses on vehicles, trains, shipping materials and <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_15\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/outdoors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">outdoor<\/a> surfaces, according to the Virginia Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_16\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/lifestyle\/watch-couple-saves-sea-turtle-entangled-fishing-net-maldives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WATCH: COUPLE SAVES SEA TURTLE ENTANGLED IN FISHING NET IN MALDIVES<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;Cities are also highly connected places where trade happens, and organisms may end up on shipments in planes or boats traveling between cities,&#8221; Winchell said. &#8220;Finally, urban environments aren\u2019t very friendly to a lot of native species, so you have a degraded ecological community that creates opportunities for new species to come in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\">An invasive bug is spreading in states up and down the northeast, and causing problems for vineyards. Now people are being told to squash these \u2018spotted lanternflies&#8217; as soon as they see them.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Each year, female <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_18\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/animals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">lanternflies<\/a> typically lay one or two egg masses, each containing about 30 to 60 eggs. They cover them with a creamy, mud-like substance that acts as camouflage to protect the egg sacs, according to Cornell University.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The eggs are laid in the fall and hatch in the <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_19\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/spring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">spring<\/a>, with young nymphs emerging as early as May and maturing into adults later in the <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_20\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\">Bobbi Wilson, a 9-year-old scientist, gains recognition for her work on the eradication of the spotted lanternfly months after being the subject of a police complaint. Wilson, joined by her mother Monique Joseph, spoke on the spotted lanternfly collection and receiving the donor scientist award from Yale University. <\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In a 2024 study from New York University, researchers found that the bugs are living up to five months longer than they did when they first arrived, due to the <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_22\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/climate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">climate<\/a> of urban environments.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;This is important because a lengthening of the active period each year means they have more time to reproduce and spread,&#8221; Winchell said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_23\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/lifestyle\/spring-sting-florida-beach-how-portuguese-jellyfish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">SPRING STING: PORTUGUESE MAN O&#8217; WAR RETURNS TO GULF COAST BEACHES<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">While <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_lifestyle_article_main-content_article-body_2_24\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/wildlife\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">lanternflies<\/a> don\u2019t bite or sting and aren\u2019t directly harmful to humans or pets, they do pose a serious threat to agriculture.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The insects feed by sucking sap from plants, weakening trees and crops like grapes, apples and hops.
