The head of a major New York City labor union called on congressional lawmakers Monday to pass a Republican-backed measure to end the 27-day-long government shutdown.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of thousands of hardworking men and women in New York and our retirees, Steamfitters Local 638 of New York City and Long Island urges our political leaders to pass the clean continuing resolution so that the American people don\u2019t bear the burden of Washington\u2019s inaction,\u201d Robert J. Bartels, Jr., the business manager of Steamfitters Local 638 New York, said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need both parties to get back to work to ensure that government works for working people,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Steamfitters Local 638 <\/a>has about 10,000 active and retired members throughout New York City and Long Island.<\/p>\n

The union endorsed President Trump<\/a> in the 2024 election.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFor too long now, Government shutdowns have become a normal part of the bargaining process in Washington DC,\u201d Bartels said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile politicians from both parties stare each other down and play the \u2018blame game,\u2019 the American worker and taxpayer suffers,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n

A House-passed stopgap funding measure that funds the government at current levels through Nov. 21 \u2013 a so-called clean continuing resolution \u2013 has been voted down 12 times by all but three Senate Democrats since the shutdown<\/a> started, on Oct. 1.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Democratic leaders have instead demanded that Republicans make concessions on healthcare policy in exchange for reopening the government, but Trump and GOP leaders have refused to negotiate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Democrat shutdown has generated economic uncertainty for our critical industries and unnecessary suffering for American families,\u201d White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe call to action is clear,\u201d Rogers said of the Steamfitters\u2019 statement. \u201cDemocrats must reopen the government through the passage of the clean continuing resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Federal funding lapsed on Oct. 1, after all but three Democratic senators rejected a GOP bill to keep the government open. REUTERS<\/p>\n

Schumer has refused to vote in favor of a GOP-backed measure to reopen the government at pre-shutdown spending levels. REUTERS<\/p>\n

Earlier Monday, the largest union of federal workers<\/a> similarly demanded that senators move forward with the clean continuing resolution \u2013 after 1.4 million government employees missed<\/a> their first full paychecks last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth political parties have made their point, and still there is no clear end in sight,\u201d American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) President Everett Kelley said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today,\u201d Kelley added. \u201cNo half measures, and no gamesmanship.\u201d<\/p>\n
