{"id":192061,"date":"2026-04-10T11:14:41","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T11:14:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/192061\/"},"modified":"2026-04-10T11:14:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T11:14:41","slug":"our-forgotten-borough-supermarket-sweep-many-bronxites-shop-around-multiple-times-to-get-best-deals-in-and-out-of-borough-bronx-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/192061\/","title":{"rendered":"OUR FORGOTTEN BOROUGH | Supermarket sweep: Many Bronxites shop around multiple times to get best deals, in and out of borough \u2013 Bronx Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For many, the experience of getting groceries in the South Bronx is not easy, even for those who can afford to be somewhat choosy.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Deborah Aviles and her son, Jordan Velez, shop at least four stores each week to find the healthy, fresh items they want at good prices, along with foods from their West Indian and Latino cultures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They shop for themselves and for Aviles\u2019 parents, and their regular rotation includes Aldi, Lidl, some local supermarkets such as Food Bazaar or Western Beef, a West Indian market, and sometimes Trader Joe\u2019s or Amazon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Bronx Times accompanied Aviles and Velez on a March 20 trip to Lidl at the Bronx Terminal Market on Exterior Street. Since Velez has a car, he regularly drives to make shopping trips easier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aviles said Aldi and Lidl have the cheapest produce that lasts the longest. Velez said that while some fresh produce is available at corner delis, he\u2019s generally not impressed with the offerings. \u201cInside the delis, they have vegetables and fruits, but they\u2019re, like, spoiled.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-142736\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Deborah-and-Jordan-inside-Lidl3-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>Deborah Aviles and her son, Jordan Velez, shop at least four stores each week to find healthy, fresh items in the Bronx that fits their needs. Photo By Emily Swanson<\/p>\n<p>Aviles and her family are health-conscious and try to minimize processed foods, sugary foods and drinks and red meat. She said she only buys olive oil or avocado oil, and uses ground turkey in place of ground beef.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over time, she\u2019s figured out where to find these healthier items in the Bronx at a good price and believes it\u2019s worth the hassle and effort.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>But before Aldi and Lidl came to the Bronx, \u201cI would go to Whole Foods and spend a lot, but I wanted my sons to have quality food,\u201d Aviles said.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Making several trips each week has now become part of her family\u2019s routine. In addition to the regular stores, she also shops at a West Indian market in the Bronx, where she buys \u201call of the provisions,\u201d such as yuca, plantains, bananas, sweet potato, yams, salt fish and whatever else is a good deal. For instance, she said she just bought a large box of oxtail for $150 to split between the three households.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is like, the life every week,\u201d Aviles said. \u201cYou take one week to just keep going around shopping, just so we can make more for our money.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Making SNAP benefits last in the South Bronx<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-142737\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/BAV6159.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\"  \/>Looking around for fresh, healthy food in the Bronx, can take a lot of time and effort, families shopping told the Bronx Times. Photo by Jonathan Portee\n<\/p>\n<p>Others who are more restricted in their shopping radius and food budget still travel to multiple stores to find good deals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kaylin Rivera, who has two kids, ages 3 and 6, is a third-generation Mott Haven resident who met the Bronx Times on March 31 at the Pioneer on St. Ann\u2019s Avenue and East 138th Street.<\/p>\n<p>She does much of her shopping at Pioneer but also goes to a meat market, Dollar Tree, Pioneer, Fine Fare and sometimes BJs Wholesale Club, depending on prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rivera receives about $530 per month in SNAP benefits and said that amount usually gets her by \u2014 but she also occasionally relies on local food pantries when the funds can\u2019t stretch far enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Looking around for deals \u2014 for instance, buying the three-pack of spaghetti sauce at BJs versus buying one jar at the store \u2014 can take a lot of time and effort.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just go day by day,\u201d Rivera said. While she said her financial situation could be better, \u201cI kinda struggle, but at the same time I don\u2019t. I\u2019m grateful for what I have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rivera said she has plenty of food stores near home but is deterred by high prices, especially on staples like beef, eggs and cereal. She often buys generic brands and monitors local stores for the best deals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the only good thing about living in New York. Everything\u2019s close by,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cWhat seems expensive here [at Pioneer], I get somewhere else.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Keeping Bronx shoppers in the Bronx\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-142738\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Costs-of-Food-Emily-S-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\"  \/>Grocery stores are struggling to offer affordable prices while customers are struggling to afford what they\u2019re selling. Photo by Jonathan Portee\n<\/p>\n<p>In addition to their local stores, some Bronx shoppers use Amazon and FreshDirect, or delivery services tied to particular stores. But it also seems that many who are able end up driving elsewhere\u2014 sometimes to other boroughs or even outside of New York City altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Pedro Suarez, director of the Third Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) in the South Bronx, said residents with cars have more freedom to go in search of deals, and those who must shop near home may get stuck paying more than necessary.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very expensive to shop locally, period,\u201d Suarez said, leading many Bronxites to spend their money in other neighborhoods \u2014 what\u2019s known in the retail world as \u201cleakage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leakage is not just a South Bronx issue. Gene DeFrancis with the Allerton Merchants Association said that many of his residents in the central Bronx have cars and feel they can get better deals outside of New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Customers] are talking about how high the prices are, so they have to go to Walmart, or they have to go other areas,\u201d mainly in Westchester and Long Island, DeFrancis told the Bronx Times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Within New York City, the high cost of goods and regulations on small businesses are often passed on to customers, DeFrancis said.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Street vendors can sometimes offer a good alternative, and though DeFrancis represents the brick-and-mortar sector, he has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bxtimes.com\/allerton-avenue-street-vendors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">defended<\/a> some of the longtime Allerton street vendors who offer cheap, fresh produce.<\/p>\n<p>For working-class people in Allerton, supermarket prices in the city are generally \u201cnot equitable,\u201d DeFrancis said. \u201cThey can\u2019t just literally go down to the [local] grocery store because they end up paying two to three times more than they should.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today, the grocery business is struggling at the same time as customers are struggling to afford what they\u2019re selling.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Residents within the BID are spending far more on groceries than anything else, according to the BID\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/sbs\/downloads\/pdf\/neighborhoods\/avenyc-cdna-thehub-melrose.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Commercial District Needs Assessment<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, residents spent $368 million on groceries \u2014 far more than at restaurants ($175 million) and other spending categories such as gasoline ($126 million) and home renovation services ($109 million).<\/p>\n<p>Today, between SNAP cuts, tariffs and high costs of operation, many business owners of all kinds feel an \u201coverall sense of unease,\u201d Suarez said.
