A man was shot and killed on the Upper West Side on Thursday afternoon near the public housing complex where he lived, police said.<\/p>\n
NYPD officials said 33-year-old Rashaun Hopkins was gunned down just before 5 p.m. outside a residential building on West 104th Street near Manhattan Avenue, right across the street from the New York City Housing Authority\u2019s Frederick Douglass Houses.<\/p>\n
First responders found Hopkins with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and took him to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.<\/p>\n
Police said they are looking for a man who was wearing all black and fled the shooting scene on a moped, going west on West 104th Street. They said they are still investigating a potential motive.<\/p>\n
Hopkins lived at the complex, in a building a few blocks from where he was shot, according to the NYPD.<\/p>\n
Shootings at public housing developments are down more than 34%<\/a> citywide so far this year, police data shows. Still, several high-profile shootings have happened at or near public housing sites over the past several weeks. That includes the fatal shooting of 7-month-old Kaori Patterson-Moore<\/a> across from Brooklyn\u2019s Bushwick Houses and that of 16-year-old Ka\u2019mardre Coleman<\/a> in the Sheepshead Bay Houses. Police have arrested suspects in both incidents.<\/p>\n NYPD data<\/a> shows overall gun violence in the city this year is up slightly compared to the same point in 2025, which officials said set historic lows for shooting incidents and victims<\/a>.<\/p>\n
