\n\tIn the late 1990s, the co-op board at the Ardsley apartment house on Central Park West famously rejected Mariah Carey\u2019s roughly $8 million cash offer to buy Barbra Streisand\u2019s penthouse duplex\u2014reportedly due to concerns over her flamboyant celebrity image and fears she would disrupt the Upper West Side building\u2019s quiet, family-oriented atmosphere. The pop superstar turned her sights downtown, where she began fashioning her very own three-tiered aerie at Tribeca<\/a>\u2018s 17-story Franklin Tower.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe\u00a0All I Want For Christmas\u00a0singer went on to dole out roughly $9 million for a duplex penthouse on the 17th and 18th floors and the full-floor unit directly below. She then brought in the late designer Mario\u00a0Buatta, the\u00a0Prince of Chintz<\/a>, to transform the unfinished space into a sumptuous art deco-inspired sanctuary, complete with plenty of eye-catching butterfly decor. It was later featured in\u00a0Architectural Digest<\/a>\u00a0and on\u00a0MTV Cribs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere are butterfly handles on the cabinets in the bedroom, and butterflies are woven into the bed hangings,\u201d Buatta told\u00a0AD. \u201cThey\u2019re even on the soap in the bath and on the tiles in the kitchen. There are so many butterflies in this apartment, you don\u2019t even notice them. But Mariah does.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe sale comes amid the singer-songwriter-producer\u2019s \u201cwell-documented borrowing against the asset,\u201d according to the\u00a0New York<\/a> Post<\/a>. The property\u2014which was part of a\u00a0Booking.com<\/a>\u00a0holiday promotion in 2022 and was listed for rent last year at $32,500 per month\u2014carries roughly $18.6 million in outstanding loans, along with a capital assessment of $1,353.76 and monthly HOA dues of about $17,000.<\/p>\n
