Soldiers based at Fort Hamilton and Marine Reservists from the 6th Communication Battalion at Brooklyn\u2019s Floyd\u00a0Bennett Field recently mustered at Bay Ridge\u2019s Denyse Wharf to remove debris and do a general cleanup in preparation for the grand celebration of America\u2019s 250th anniversary on July 4.<\/p>\n

The United States Semiquincentennial\u00a0 will include a major maritime\u00a0launch into New York Harbor featuring tall ships from around the world, a Fleet Week parade of ships plus an International\u00a0Naval Review, all sailing past historic Denyse\u00a0Wharf and Fort Hamilton.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Denyse Wharf has a direct link to the Battle of Brooklyn and America\u2019s fight for freedom.\u00a0During the revolution, the site was used by reportedly 20,000 British and Hessian soldiers who came ashore on Aug. 22, 1776.\u00a0In 1783 they used it to evacuate their forces.<\/p>\n

Fort Hamilton U.S. Army Garrison Commander\u00a0Melissa Cantwell\u00a0thanked the joint-service cleanup crew and presented them with citations for their commitment.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sunday, March 29 was National Vietnam Veterans Day and its 51st anniversary, but here in New York it was commemorated by the United War Veterans Council (UWVC) on Saturday, March 28. First, in\u00a0front\u00a0of\u00a0Fraunces Tavern, 54 Pearl St., the names of 1,744 New Yorkers lost in service were read. Then followed a flag-raising and procession at Evacuation Day Plaza adjacent to 26 Broadway. And finally a large wreath was placed at Vietnam Veterans Plaza at 55 Water St.<\/p>\n

The proceedings at the plaza included\u00a0 an Army ROTC Color Guard from\u00a0Fordham University, which presented\u00a0 the Colors. Fort Hamilton U.S. Army Garrison Chaplain\u00a0Patrick\u00a0Lime\u00a0gave the invocation. \u201cTaps\u201d was played an Army musician.<\/p>\n

Mark Otto, president\u00a0and executive\u00a0director of the UWVC, emceed the agenda. Guest speakers\u00a0included Mayor\u00a0Zohran Mamdani\u2019s\u00a0new Veterans Service Commissioner\u00a0Yesenia Mata, a reserve US Army captain.\u00a0The prestigious\u00a0Patrick L. Gualtieri Service to Vietnam Veterans Award was presented to\u00a0Joseph\u00a0G. Graham.<\/p>\n

Also in attendance at the ceremonies were Fort Hamilton Garrison Commander\u00a0Melissa Cantwell\u00a0and former Fort Hamilton Deputy Garrison\u00a0Commander\u00a0Lee Anderson, a Vietnam veteran and for many years also\u00a0head of the Fort Hamilton High School Army Junior ROTC program, and currently a member and officer of Brooklyn Rolling Thunder.<\/p>\n

The Brooklyn Chapter of the DAR is holding\u00a0 a trivia fund-raiser on Sunday, May 3, from 1 to 2 p.m.\u00a0According to DAR Chapter Regent\u00a0Kathy Fontaine\u00a0it\u2019s to benefit the Brooklyn chapter and the Battle of Brooklyn 250th commemoration.\u00a0 The event is open to the public and they are offering fun trivia and door prizes.\u00a0Tickets are $23.18 and are available via Eventbrite.com.<\/p>\n
