{"id":193049,"date":"2026-04-11T04:36:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T04:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/193049\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T04:36:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T04:36:15","slug":"clay-holmes-exits-with-left-hamstring-tightness-in-mets-worry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/193049\/","title":{"rendered":"Clay Holmes exits with left hamstring tightness in Mets worry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Clay Holmes left one game but said he is \u201coptimistic\u201d he will not miss another.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mets starting pitcher exited with one out in the top of the sixth inning with what the club is calling left hamstring tightness that, as of Friday night, did not appear to be serious.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the hours after Holmes walked off the field, Mets trainers put him through tests, and he \u201ccontinues to check the boxes,\u201d manager Carlos Mendoza said after a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/10\/sports\/bats-go-silent-again-clay-holmes-exits-with-injury-in-mets-loss-to-as\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">4-0 loss to the A\u2019s<\/a> at Citi Field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mets were feeling confident enough in Holmes\u2019 hamstring that even though it forced him from the outing, there were no immediate plans for an MRI exam. Holmes walked off the field and walked around the clubhouse with no noticeable difference in his gait.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course, he and the Mets will have a better feeling for the severity when he wakes up Saturday, and the club\u2019s fingers are crossed until then.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully we\u2019re in a good spot, doesn\u2019t seem too major,\u201d said Holmes, who had been rolling until he took a few steps toward first base and felt something \u201cweird.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To begin the sixth, Tyler Soderstrom hit a chopper to second base and Holmes instinctively accelerated toward first.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39054718\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/20260410_MetsAs_CS022.jpg\" alt=\"New York Mets pitcher Clay Holmes (35) is pulled in the sixth inning against the Athletics at Citi Field, Friday, April 10, 2026,\" class=\"wp-image-39054718\"  \/>New York Mets pitcher Clay Holmes (35) is pulled in the sixth inning against the Athletics at Citi Field, Friday, April 10, 2026. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST<\/p>\n<p>He made his way back to the mound and felt uncertain. He airmailed a pitch to Jacob Wilson, and \u201csomething didn\u2019t look right,\u201d Mendoza said. The next pitch Wilson smacked for a single, and Mendoza and a trainer immediately jogged to the mound.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMade the smart decision to not make it worse,\u201d said Holmes, who was strong (5 \u00b9\/\u2083 innings, one run) for a third straight start to begin the season and has looked as if he is taking a step following a successful first major league season as a starting pitcher.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201chope,\u201d Mendoza said, is that an IL stint is not required. If Holmes takes a turn for the worse, Sean Manaea and Tobias Myers would be rotation candidates from the bullpen, and Christian Scott and Jonah Tong are in the minors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jorge Polanco did not play for a second straight day and has not played the field in two weeks, but the Mets are encouraged after receiving \u201cgood news\u201d Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDelivering insights on all things Amazin\u2019s\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Mets by Mike Puma, exclusively on Sports+\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/10\/sports\/mets-jorge-polancos-achilles-issue-could-land-him-on-injured-list\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Polanco\u2019s left Achilles issue grew serious enough<\/a> for the club to send him for an MRI exam, which revealed that \u201cthe tendon\u2019s healthy,\u201d Mendoza said, and the issue is bursitis \u2014 inflammation, basically.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe continues to be day to day. He feels a lot better,\u201d Mendoza said of Polanco, who took batting practice on the field before the game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mendoza believed Polanco would be available as a pinch-hitter, which was a significant development considering Thursday afternoon Mendoza acknowledged the club was weighing a stint on the injured list.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For now at least, putting Polanco on the shelf is no longer an option. Robert Sabo for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>They are still waiting to see how Polanco feels each day, though, and have no timetable for when he can return to the field. Polanco, who has a history of leg issues, played first base for the first two games of the season and served as designated hitter for his next eight games.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was good that now we know what we\u2019re dealing with,\u201d Mendoza said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ronny Mauricio went 0-for-3 in his first start of the season, the switch-hitter playing third base against a righty (J.T. Ginn) while Mark Vientos took a seat (amid an 0-for-10 slide).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mendoza wanted to give Bo Bichette a half-day off amid a stretch of nine games in nine days, so Bichette served as DH.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Upon calling up Mauricio when <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/06\/sports\/juan-soto-to-miss-at-least-two-weeks-in-mets-injury-calamity\/#:~:text=The%20Mets%20have%20placed%20Soto&#039;s,to%20fill%20the%20roster%20spot.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Juan Soto was placed on the injured list<\/a>, Mendoza acknowledged that it would be difficult for Mauricio to find consistent time. Mauricio\u2019s first at-bat of the season being a walk-off single Tuesday helped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve said it since he got here: It\u2019s probably going to be hard [to find at-bats], but it happens fast,\u201d Mendoza said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Soto is progressing \u201cas we would expect,\u201d president of baseball operations David Stearns said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Soto is not yet running after suffering a right calf strain April 3.
