{"id":193344,"date":"2026-04-11T13:19:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T13:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/193344\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T13:19:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T13:19:08","slug":"influencer-goes-viral-for-nyc-bodega-themed-birthday-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/193344\/","title":{"rendered":"Influencer goes viral for NYC bodega-themed birthday party"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Texas man didn\u2019t have to go far to get a taste of his beloved Brooklyn bodega.<\/p>\n<p>An Austin influencer went viral for throwing her husband a\u00a0bodega-themed birthday party to make him feel like he was back home.<\/p>\n<p>Williamsburg native Joel Durverge didn\u2019t want a party at first, his wife, Kristen, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like, \u2018How can I convince him?\u2019 The second I said \u2018bodega,\u2019 he lit up,\u201d said Duverge, 44, whose \u201cBodega Brunch\u201d video racked up 1.8 million views on Instagram and TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>The mom of two went all out for the authentic NYC experience \u2014 transforming her kitchen into \u201cJ&amp;J Grocery\u201d with real scratch-off lotto tickets; milk crates; signs that said \u201cATM Inside\u201d and \u201cOPEN\u201d \u2014 and of course, a plushie grey and white cat perched on the bagel case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause that was the color cat that he remembers in his bodega growing up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>On her counter, she displayed mini bags of chips on a rack; a box of mini Hostess cupcakes; a Styrofoam carton with Snapple \u2014 and a griddle, where she served BECs wrapped in foil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bacon egg and cheese, that\u2019s just New York, all day, every day, to this day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She even left out the letter \u201cD\u201d on the sign that read \u201cCOFFEE LOTTO SAN WICH.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you go down to South Williamsburg and you just go into the little markets, something\u2019s always misspelled,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Kristen Duverge went all out for her husband Joel\u2019s bodega-themed party.  Courtesy of Kristen Duverge<\/p>\n<p>For drinks, the creative hostess poured what looked like lemonade \u2014 but was actually margaritas \u2014 in plastic deli containers with a hole on the cover for the straw.<\/p>\n<p>Dessert included Joel\u2019s favorite childhood candy \u2014 Lemonheads, Chick-O-Sticks, Laffy Taffy and Airheads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was texting with his best friend who also grew up in the same area,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was telling me what they used to buy for like 25 cents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All the decor, including beer wrapped in brown paper bags and a table with dominoes, was inspired by the stories Joel, 39, told her about his <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/22\/us-news\/loyal-bodega-guy-goes-viral-on-tiktok-for-taping-customers-former-situationship-with-another-girl\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">local bodega<\/a> \u2014 Santos Grocery on South 2nd Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe always told me about how his dad and his buddies would go to the bodega. It was like a hang-out. They would have their beer in the brown paper bag. Courtesy of Kristen Duverge<\/p>\n<p>Many online picked up on all of Duverge\u2019s details, praising her with accolades like, \u201cDrink in the paper bag is classic,\u201d \u201cCat on the bread sealed the deal!\u201d and \u201cYou had me at \u201cSANWICH.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others said it made them miss NYC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOmg, why this makes me emotional and touches me deep. This was my childhood in Brooklyn, NY. The corner store was everything. I can\u2019t love this enough,\u201d one gushed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUgh I\u2019m now homesick,\u201d another added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoel got emotional too,\u201d Duverge said. \u201cWhen we sang \u2018Happy Birthday,\u2019 he teared up, which he never does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the couple returns to Williamsburg, Joel always finds a reason to run to the bodega.  noahandjules<\/p>\n<p>Some pointed out some things they would have added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe blue coffee cups was the only things that was missing,\u201d one said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy only beef with this is: mija those BEC shoulda been on a roll not a bagel,\u201d one observed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowing up it was always on a roll, but we did bagels because that\u2019s what he loves,\u201d Duverge explained.<\/p>\n<p>Duverge seems to have started a trend \u2014 as many commented on her post, saying they plan to throw bodega baby showers or kids\u2019 birthday parties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA couple people wanted to throw a bodega summer party. I was like, \u2018Do it in the front and turn the pump on if you can,&#8217;\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The family now lives in Austin, where they still get bacon, egg and cheeses. \u201cI mean, are they the same? Absolutely not,\u201d Kristen said.  Courtesy of Kristen Duverge<\/p>\n<p>Duverge, a native of Las Vegas with Puerto Rican roots, moved to Bushwick in 2011, and met Joel, of Dominican heritage, at a Fourth of July barbecue at McCarren Park the following year.<\/p>\n<p>They moved to Texas in 2018 \u2014 and do try to replicate their NYC experience by ordering bacon, egg and cheeses there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, are they the same? Absolutely not,\u201d she said. \u201cCan you go to the corner store and get them? No. So we make a lot of them at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whenever they return to Williamsburg, Joel always finds an excuse to visit the bodega.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s always like, \u2018I\u2019m going to the store.
