A massive fire broke out early Saturday morning at a three-story apartment building in the Bronx, with reports indicating the blaze may have been sparked by an abundance of candles in one tenant’s home. Witnesses said the resident on the second floor was known to fill her apartment with candles and may have been mentally ill. One tenant was critically injured, but officials were able to evacuate the building in time.

Why it matters

Fires in multi-unit residential buildings can have devastating consequences, especially when caused by the actions of a single tenant. This incident raises questions about mental health support, fire safety regulations, and the responsibility of building owners to monitor potential hazards in individual units.

The details

The fire started around 3:30 a.m. on Leland Avenue and quickly engulfed the upper floors of the three-story building. Tenants reported that a woman on the second floor was known to fill her apartment with numerous candles, which may have been the source of the blaze. One resident was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after neighbors worked to evacuate the building.
