The Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty\u2019s parent company, BSE Global, has breathed life into an abandoned Modell\u2019s Sporting Goods store. After years of scouring Brooklyn for the right location, BSE Global has shifted the facility from selling athletic apparel to selling dreams.<\/p>\n
Revitalized as the Brooklyn Basketball Training Center, the 18,600-square-foot facility is across from the Barclays Center on Flatbush Avenue and hosts after-school programming and basketball clinics for children ages 6 through 17. It boasts two full courts and one half-court \u201cshooting lab,\u201d all powered by Shoot 360 technology<\/a>, which tracks analytics like arc, alignment and percentage. It\u2019s the same technology used by NBA teams such as the Golden State Warriors.<\/p>\n The facility is operated by BSE\u2019s youth program, Brooklyn Basketball, and aims to support a new generation of Nets and Liberty fans by connecting them closer to the game.<\/p>\n \u201cThe point is to ignite passion and interest in the game of basketball,\u201d said Marissa Shorenstein, chief external affairs officer for BSE Global. \u201cIt\u2019s not necessarily to create the next elite player, but it\u2019s really to just give kids the opportunity to build their skills and empower them to learn what the game is about beyond the specific, actual skills of basketball, like working together and being part of a team, culture and all the things that come from that.\u201d<\/p>\n Shorenstein and BSE Global declined to share the costs of the facility. But with this move, BSE Global joins the likes of the Dallas Stars<\/a> and Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns<\/a> in building their own youth sports-focused facility. It follows the trend<\/a> of soaring investments in youth sports facilities, from less than $200 million eight years ago to over $1 billion last year.<\/p>\n Though the Brooklyn Basketball Training Center opened a month ago, BSE Global and Brooklyn Basketball see more on the horizon.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the coming two to five years, we certainly are hoping to open additional locations,\u201d Shorenstein said.<\/p>\n The Brooklyn Basketball Training Center is leased by BSE Global from Greenland USA. Construction was overseen by BSE\u2019s CAPEX team, in partnership with Reidy Contracting Group. Architecture was handled by New York-based ENV and fellow N.Y.-based OLA Consulting Engineers.<\/p>\n Utilizing a partnership from the New York City Department of Education, the facility offers free basketball clinics for elementary and middle school students. Through the deal, Brooklyn Basketball is able to reach 200 schools and provide clinics for more than 40,000 youth.<\/p>\n \u201cOur goal is to ensure that kids in every part of the borough have access to this type of facility,\u201d Shorenstein said. \u201cRight now, it\u2019s about making sure the community knows we\u2019re here, getting as many youth in as possible and learning what programming best serves our families. We want to build something that really makes an impact for Brooklyn.\u201d<\/p>\n The facility is open seven days a week, typically from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., but can stay open longer for other events, like corporate group outings or even birthday parties.
