NEW YORK, April 11 (Reuters) \u2013 The Manhattan district attorney\u2019s office confirmed on Saturday that it is investigating sexual assault allegations against U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, a California \u200bDemocrat and a leading candidate for governor of the \u200cstate.<\/p>\n
The San Francisco Chronicle on Friday reported that a woman who previously worked in Swalwell\u2019s district office accused him of two nonconsensual sexual encounters, one while she was employed by him in 2019 and another in 2024 after she \u200chad \u200bleft his staff. She told CNN that \u2060he raped her during the \u20602024 encounter in a New York City hotel.<\/p>\n
Swalwell has denied the accusations nL6N40U00G as \u201cabsolutely false\u201d and vowed to fight them, but several leading Democrats have urged him to end his bid \u200bfor governor.<\/p>\n
The woman, whom the Chronicle and CNN did not name, was quoted as saying she had been too intoxicated on \u2060both occasions to consent, according to the \u2060report.<\/p>\n
CNN also reported that three other women accused \u200bSwalwell of sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n
The Manhattan district attorney\u2019s office urged anyone with knowledge \u200bof the allegations to contact its special victims division.<\/p>\n
Representative \u200cAnna Paulina Luna, a Florida Republican, posted on X that she planned to file a motion to expel Swalwell from Congress.<\/p>\n
Appearing on Fox News, Luna said on Saturday that it would be unacceptable for \u2060Swalwell to end his gubernatorial bid yet remain in Congress. She said she would file the disciplinary motion next week.<\/p>\n
In his denial, Swalwell noted \u2060that the allegations \u200ccome ahead of the June primary in the \u2060governor\u2019s race. In a large field of candidates \u200bfrom multiple \u200cparties, Swalwell has been widely considered one of \u200bthe leading \u2060contenders to advance to a runoff in California\u2019s nonpartisan voting for governor.<\/p>\n
The top two finishers in June\u2019s primary will advance to the general election in November, even if they are from the same party.<\/p>\n
