NEW YORK, April 11 (Reuters) – The Manhattan district attorney\u2019s office confirmed on Saturday that it is investigating \u200csexual assault allegations against U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, a \u200cCalifornia Democrat and a leading candidate for governor of the state.<\/p>\n
The San Francisco Chronicle \u200bon Friday reported that a woman who previously worked in Swalwell\u2019s district office accused him of two nonconsensual sexual encounters, one while she was employed by him in 2019 and another in 2024 after \u200cshe had left his \u2060staff. She told CNN that he raped her during the 2024 encounter in a New York City \u2060hotel.<\/p>\n
Swalwell has denied the accusations nL6N40U00G as “absolutely false” and vowed to fight them, but several leading Democrats have urged him to end his \u200bbid \u200bfor governor.<\/p>\n
The woman, whom the Chronicle \u200band CNN did not \u200cname, was quoted as saying she had been too intoxicated on both occasions to consent, according to the report.<\/p>\n
CNN also reported that three other women accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n
The Manhattan district attorney’s office urged anyone with knowledge of the allegations to contact its \u200cspecial victims division.<\/p>\n
In his denial, Swalwell \u200bnoted that the allegations come ahead of \u200bthe June primary in \u200bthe governor’s race. In a large field of candidates \u200cfrom multiple parties, Swalwell has \u200bbeen widely considered \u200bone of the leading contenders to advance to a runoff in California’s nonpartisan voting for governor.<\/p>\n
The top two finishers in \u200bJune’s primary will advance \u200cto the general election in November, even if they \u200bare from the same party.<\/p>\n
