season-high<\/a> six innings in the Mets\u2019 1-0 loss to the Athletics on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field, despite dealing with a high pitch count yet again, allowing a single run on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks.<\/p>\nThe lone blemish of his afternoon came on Nick Kurtz\u2019s solo home run in the top of the third inning, when the young Athletics slugger golfed a curveball well below the zone into the right-field seats.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a bad pitch,\u201d Peralta said. \u201cBut I\u2019ve been seeing him, and he has a very good swing. He\u2019s a power hitter, and he\u2019s a tall guy. So I think he did what he needed to do with that pitch, and I tip my cap to him. I probably have to be better.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even with six punchouts, his putaway stuff was still not all there. He constantly labored, running up six three-ball counts. His second inning was particularly stressful, featuring a 10-pitch groundout against Max Muncy and an eight-pitch walk to Darell Hernaiz just two batters later.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On his 44th pitch of the afternoon \u2014 his 29th pitch of that inning \u2014 he got Denzel Clarke looking at a changeup.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\u201cProbably it was the curveball [that was giving me trouble],\u201d Peralta said. \u201cThe changeup was fine, everything was good. Just for some reason, they weren\u2019t swinging at the low changes. We made the adjustments. That\u2019s what I\u2019m happy with.\u201d<\/p>\n
He ran into trouble in the fourth when he walked Muncy and gave up a double to Jeff McNeil to put men on second and third with one out, but he got Hernaiz swinging at a changeup and was bailed out by center fielder Carson Benge, who made a diving catch on a Clarke blooper.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s hard because that weak contact sometimes is really dangerous,\u201d Peralta said. \u201cFor me personally, if it\u2019s gonna happen, we\u2019d rather get hard contact. But it was an awesome play by him. I couldn\u2019t believe it. For a moment, I thought he was going to hit the ground, but he was prepared for that, and he made it look great.\u201d<\/p>\n
At 73 pitches through four innings, he managed to gut out the next two innings, needing just 27 pitches, including an 11-pitch sixth inning.\n<\/p>\n
Peralta lasted only 4.2 innings in his previous start on Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, when a high pitch count forced him to throw 101 pitches in his shortest outing to date as a Met. He allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts that day, in which New York was able to come back late and pull out a 4-3 win in extra innings.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cEven probably not having my best stuff today, I competed with myself and grinded to be better and tried to be the best for me and my team,\u201d Peralta said.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
