James Keivom for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have\u00a0thought often of Margaret Thatcher\u2019s quote: \u2018The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people\u2019s money,\u2019\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cIf anything, my friends, it seems that you eventually need a socialist to clean up the mess.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor 102 days, we have endeavored to do exactly that, delivering both public goods and public excellence,\u201d he added. \u201cThat is the change that government can deliver, and it is the change that democratic socialism can deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani\u00a0listed\u00a0numerous achievements, including dedicating time to the various potholes paved during his first 100 days in office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the end of this year, the Department of Transportation will repave 1,150 lane miles of our streets,\u201d Mamdani said. \u201cOn day six, when we paved the bump at the base of the Williamsburg Bridge, that was pothole politics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf government can\u2019t do the small things, how could you ever trust it to do the big ones?\u201d the mayor noted. \u201cHow can we promise to transform our city if we can\u2019t pave your street?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani supporters holding up signs featuring his campaign promises. James Keivom for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Other accomplishments he listed included his pilot program for city-run day care, a proposal to get rid of scaffolding sheds, and modifications to make sewer drains more effective.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/06\/us-news\/nyc-ny-politics-live-updates-on-zohran-mamdani-governors-race-more-april-6-7-8-9\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Follow live updates on Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s socialist agenda and the latest in NYC politics<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mamdani also announced<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/12\/us-news\/nycs-first-city-owned-grocery-store-under-lefty-mayor-mamdani-to-open-in-east-harlem-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0intentions to deliver on a key campaign promise by opening the first city-owned grocery store<\/a>\u00a0at La Marqueta in East Harlem by next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am proud to announce that we will open every single one of these stores by the end of our first term, and the first one will open next\u00a0year, stores where prices are fair, where workers are treated with dignity, and where New Yorkers can actually afford to shop at our stores, eggs\u00a0will be cheaper, bread will be cheaper, grocery shopping will no longer be an unsolvable equation,\u201d he told the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>His proposal for the East\u00a0Harlem store \u2014 which is already owned by the city \u2014 would\u00a0eat up nearly half of the $70 million he proposed for the five-store program as recently as February,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/12\/nyregion\/mamdani-city-owned-grocery-store-la-marqueta.html?unlocked_article_code=1.aVA.wmcn.mHUb27FkCTy8&amp;smid=nytcore-android-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">according to the New York Times.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hizzoner also said that his administration will complete an \u201cambitious campaign\u201d for trash containerization across all five boroughs and has devised a plan with Gov. Kathy Hochul to speed up city buses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alongside Hochul, Mamdani announced he will work to speed up buses by up to 20% in 45 priority corridors and construct \u201cworld-class rapid bus routes\u201d for 100,000 New Yorkers who live more than half a mile from a subway or rail stop.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani told the crowd he has lived up to his promise to govern New York city as a democratic socialist. James Keivom for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut in a city where every minute counts, where time is money, it is unacceptable that some buses run as slow as five miles an hour,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why, on the campaign, I\u00a0promise to make muscles\u00a0faster, and it\u2019s why tonight, I am so excited to share that we will cut down commutes by up to six minutes each way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mayor\u2019s party even had a \u201c100 days museum,\u201d which featured a kid-sized podium from his day care announcement, and leftovers from the Taco Bell wrapper and drink he devoured during a March Q&amp;A he gave about fast food worker initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>And the soaring rhetoric that helped propel the 34-year-old to office was on full display at the Sunday party,\u00a0which was<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/09\/us-news\/mamdani-hosts-anti-israel-activist-mahmoud-khalil-at-gracie-mansion-for-ramadan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0attended by controversial anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil<\/a>, a former Columbia grad student from Syria detained by ICE last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome said that once the hard work began, we would forget the movement of working people that rewrote what was possible in this city,\u201d the mayor\u2019s remarks said. \u201cOthers warned that the left could only debate but could never deliver. Socialists might be able to win a campaign, they said, but we could never advance an agenda. To\u00a0prove that government can be worthy of the people it serves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mayor also brought Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders out to surprise the\u00a0crowd \u2014\u00a0hours after he appeared alongside the nation\u2019s socialist-in-chief at a union rally Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been on platforms with hundreds and hundreds of mayors and all kinds of public officials. James Keivom for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the mayor is doing is providing hope and inspiration, not only to people all across our country, but honestly, all across the world,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you guys are doing here is telling the world that we can have a government that works for all of us, not just the oligarchs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Less prominent, however, were the numerous sweeping campaign promises Mamdani failed to follow through on in his first 100 days.<\/p>\n<p>Among them was his vow to halt his predecessor Eric Adams\u2019 initiative to clear homeless encampments and let vagrants keep living in dangerous squalor if they wanted \u2014 but he did away with that plan after a series of brutal winter storms led to freezing deaths in encampments.<\/p>\n<p>Another shortcoming included his \u201cDepartment of Community Safety,\u201d which was to have social workers responding to non-violent 911 calls instead of police at the price of about $1.1 billion in funding.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani speaking at a union rally in Manhattan on April 12, 2026. Mango for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the much-hyped program has been languishing with a budget of $260 million and just two staffers.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani still cited the department as proof that his administration\u2019s approach to public safety has been working and exclaimed that murders have \u201chit record lows\u201d since he took office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has not been a murder on Staten Island in more than 180 days.
