He assumed office on Jan. 3, 2013, and left office on Jan. 3, 2021, after he was defeated in the Democratic Primary in June 2020 by now former Congressman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/bernie-to-boomers-tax-the-rich-as-april-1st-budget-deadline-extended\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jamaal Bowman<\/a>, as reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/engel-wishes-bowman-well-following-his-defeat-in-the-16th-congressional-district-race\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>, Engel wished <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/update-bernie-sanders-joins-aoc-jamaal-bowman-unions-more-in-the-bronx-for-st-marys-park-rally\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bowman<\/a> well following his defeat. The late former congressman\u2019s farewell speech to Congress can be viewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/clip\/us-house-of-representatives\/representative-eliot-engel-farewell-speech\/4931187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">here<\/a>. The upset victory by Bowman in 2020 was viewed at the time during a year which saw the death of George Floyd, the rise of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/black-lives-matter-protests-continue-as-legislation-passes-and-nypd-disbands-anti-crime-unit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black Lives Matter<\/a>, and the COVID-19 pandemic, as a major win for progressives.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/edenwald-bowman-latimer-ny-16-primary-seen-as-litmus-test-for-future-of-democratic-party\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>, Bowman, who recently celebrated his 50th birthday, subsequently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/06\/25\/jamaal-bowman-loses-george-latimer-00164997\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost<\/a> the Democratic primary in 2024, and the NY-16 seat is currently held by Congressman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norwoodnews.org\/edenwald-bowman-latimer-ny-16-primary-seen-as-litmus-test-for-future-of-democratic-party\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">George Latimer<\/a>. The latter said of Engel, \u201cEliot Engel devoted his lifetime to public service \u2013 as a teacher and as an elected official in Albany and Washington DC. His legacy consists of hard work on issues and kindness to all. His work in helping bring peace to the Balkans in the 1990s was a major accomplishment, among many others. We mourn with his family, and extend to them our deepest condolences. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. May his memory be a blessing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (A.D. 81), who represents the northwest Bronx, said, \u201cThe Bronx lost a giant today with the passing of former Congressman Eliot Engel. Eliot was a wonderful husband, father, friend and son of the Bronx. He grew up from humble beginnings, having lived in NYCHA housing and Co-op City. He attended Bronx public schools, Hunter College in the Bronx (now Lehman College.) He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from the Bronx for 32 years \u2013 longer than anyone in history. He rose to the chairmanship of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where he had a global impact in a very positive way in so many areas of foreign policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The assemblyman added, \u201cOver the years he helped tens of thousands of people in his district, attended thousands of community events and was a fierce advocate for the Bronx and every community in his district. Eliot\u2019s legacy will live on. Eliot was my friend for most of my life. It was an honor to serve the public with him. Alessandra Biaggi, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, and chief of staff to Congressman Eliot Engel Bill Weitz, at the town hall forum in Woodlawn on Feb. 19.<br \/>Photo by David Cruz<\/p>\n<p>According to Ballotpedia, Engel was first elected to the House in 1988. \u201cBefore redistricting in 2012, Engel served the 17th District from 1993 to 2013,\u201d an extract from Ballotpedia reads. \u201cHe also represented the 19th District from 1989 to 1993.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It continues, \u201cPrior to his congressional career, Engel served as a member of the new York State Assembly from 1977 to 1989.\u201d\u00a0 According to Ballotpedia, in the 116th Congress, Engel became chairman of the Foreign Affairs committee and was a founding member of the Congressional Medicare for All Caucus in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Sen. Kristen Gillibrand also paid her respects, writing, \u201cToday, New York mourns the loss of former Congressman Eliot Engel. Eliot was not only my colleague for many years, but he was also a close friend who exemplified persistence and compassion for those he represented. Eliot loved our nation and had a passion for public service that never wavered throughout his 44 years in elected office. Eliot Engel\u2019s service to our country will never be forgotten. My condolences go out to his wife, children, and grandchildren. May his memory be a blessing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0American Jewish Committee CEO Ted Deutch also commented on the death of Engel, with whom Deutch served in the House of Representatives for more than 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cServing alongside Eliot Engel was one of the great privileges of my time in Congress,\u201d Deutch said. \u201cEliot combined deep moral clarity with an unwavering commitment to America\u2019s alliances, especially the U.S.\u2013Israel relationship. He led the Foreign Affairs Committee with principle, steadiness, and a genuine respect for colleagues on both sides of the aisle. Eliot was a statesman, a dedicated public servant and a voice for his constituents in Westchester County and The Bronx \u2013 including me. Eliot and I had the honor of together representing the Bronx in our respective roles, but our connection goes back even further.
