After leaving Windsor for the final time in 2022, having already said farewell to her beloved pony Emma, she requested that the youngest members of her family join her at Balmoral one last time.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e5NZRbh6fvg\" data-wc=\"30\">One of these precious moments was captured on camera by <a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/tags\/kate-middleton\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kate<\/a>, then the Duchess of Cambridge, leaving the young children with a poignant souvenir of their great-grandmother\u2019s love for them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"eETaGUnOMtb\" data-wc=\"47\">\u201cShe was very keen that all the great-grandchildren should have a nice, happy memory of her, so she wanted them all to come up to Balmoral,\u201d the royal author Robert Hardman told the audience at an exclusive live recording of HELLO!\u2019s A Right Royal Podcast last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"elCOVMg2Tf\" data-wc=\"17\">\u201cIt was a sadness that Archie and Lilibet didn\u2019t come that summer, but all the others did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>  <img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/9506996f0bca-gettyimages-515462654.jpg\"   width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Queen Elizabeth II of England at Balmoral Castle with one of her Corgis, 28th September 1952.\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" class=\"image he-image\"\/>\u00a9 Bettmann ArchiveRobert&#8217;s new book about the late Queen hit shelves last week<\/p>\n<p id=\"elXw6mP5Wnt\" data-wc=\"42\">Robert was reflecting on the life of the late monarch on the day that his new book \u2013 Elizabeth II: In Private, In Public, The Inside Story \u2013 was published, ahead of what would have been her 100th birthday later this month.<\/p>\n<p id=\"eEn1NiCIg0I\" data-wc=\"47\">In an interview conducted by podcast hosts Emily Nash, Emmy Griffiths and Andrea Caama\u00f1o in a private dining space, The Judge\u2019s Court, at <a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.browns-restaurants.co.uk\/restaurants\/london\/covent-garden\/privatedining#\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\">Browns Covent Garden<\/a>, he delighted more than 60 readers of\u00a0HELLO!\u00a0magazine with anecdotes and previously untold stories about the late Queen\u2019s extraordinary life.<\/p>\n<p id=\"eHhXCY-8t5L\" data-wc=\"18\">Attendees also received a gift bag of luxury treats from Clarins, Elizabeth Arden, Floris, Simple, Yardley and Bronnley.<\/p>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"he-imBa-98262f he-boLe-10565d4 he-stSm-1066b1e\" alt=\"HELLO!\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/09bb3cffa1cc-hello-white.png\" width=\"1024\" height=\"329\"\/><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/c7fdf79b0405-260409hello406.jpg\"   width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Audience members were treated to a luxury goodie bag at our event at Browns Covent Garden\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" class=\"image he-image\"\/>\u00a9 Alex IngramAudience members were treated to a luxury goodie bag at our event at Browns Covent Garden<\/p>\n<p>Remarkable stories from her reign<\/p>\n<p id=\"eXiXGNiVn7s\" data-wc=\"38\">Reflecting on the monarch\u2019s renowned stoicism, Robert recalled how she carried out a public engagement just hours after she woke to find an intruder, Michael Fagan, sitting on the edge of her bed at Buckingham Palace in 1982.<\/p>\n<p id=\"eSuxEYhMVOr\" data-wc=\"35\">\u201cWhat is so extraordinary is that she had an investiture that morning at 11am,\u201d he said. \u201cShe knew all those people had come a very long way; It was getting really ugly and bombs were going off. It had been very stressful for the Queen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"epdntyaIc5L\" data-wc=\"38\">\u201cShe went back to London, cancelled all of her engagements and took to her bed, which was completely unlike her. The palace put out a statement saying that she was suffering from what they called a summer flu.<\/p>\n<p id=\"euR4Q7fgasX\" data-wc=\"25\">\u201cBut, as I was told by someone very senior, it was actually nervous exhaustion. That was the one year she didn\u2019t do her Christmas broadcast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Successful union with Prince Philip<\/p>\n<p id=\"eTn1EBv8QmI\" data-wc=\"41\">By her side during that time was, of course, her adoring husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. Robert told the podcast audience that the Queen stopped travelling overseas in her later years to ensure that she could be there for Prince Philip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"e3wmQIgwGdQ\" data-wc=\"46\">\u201cShe just didn&#8217;t want to go, in case he was ill while she was away,\u201d he said, adding that she liked to take care of her husband. \u201cShe once said to someone talking to her: \u2018I\u2019ve got to go, I\u2019m going to give Philip his lunch.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>  <img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776063131_386_e672333754a2-queen-elizabeth-philip-wedding-anniversary.jpg\"   width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"HM The Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip smiling at eachother\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" class=\"image he-image\"\/>\u00a9 Getty ImagesThe late Queen and Prince Philip were married for 73 years<\/p>\n<p id=\"ed7T4zF9kZB6\" data-wc=\"59\">\u201cHe gave her a lot of confidence-building measures in the early years. He was very much \u2018the alpha\u2019, but his duty was to her and she was always trying to repay that. For example, one of the first things she did when she became Queen was appoint him as a ranger for Windsor Great Park, which he absolutely loved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Worries about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor<\/p>\n<p id=\"ey9nlXSUPyrn\" data-wc=\"43\">The couple were united in their concerns for their middle son, then known as Prince Andrew, whose fall from grace created a very difficult time. \u201cShe could see that the others [children] were self-starters; they were confident and would get on with life.<\/p>\n<p id=\"eNC8n38aWcPZ\" data-wc=\"33\">\u201cBut Andrew was headstrong \u2013 by the time he was a young adult, it was quite clear that he was impressionable and a bit boorish, and would say and do the wrong thing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"e2sOkyImVBgL\" data-wc=\"66\">Of <a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/tags\/prince-andrew\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor<\/a>\u2019s former role as the UK\u2019s trade envoy, which led to his recent arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office, Robert said: \u201cI think many people let Andrew get away with a lot of stuff. Part of that probably was that they didn&#8217;t want to upset the Queen, who was fully aware that he could be a handful. She was worried about him.<\/p>\n<p id=\"egL7wC6mtSjb\">\u201cI was told by someone very close to her that one of the hardest things she had to do was agree to effectively draft his resignation letter [from royal duties] in 2019. It was so painful for her. Everyone was appalled.<\/p>\n<p id=\"eMjLkPWko_Pd\" data-wc=\"47\">\u201c<a class=\"hm-link he-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/tags\/prince-philip\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"article-body-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prince Philip<\/a> actually wrote a letter of apology, and when it was finally relayed to the Queen, she said: \u2018I know what he is like.\u2019 She dealt in gestures, if you will. Within months of this incident, [the Master, now Vice Admiral Sir Tony Johnstone-Burt] was knighted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Painful moments&#8217; with the Sussexes<\/p>\n<p id=\"e6iTHvzHxlmw\" data-wc=\"40\">Another tough chapter in her life came when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from royal duties for a life in the US. \u201cIt was one of the painful moments of her later years,\u201d he told the audience.<\/p>\n<p>  <img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/7ee75b4f242c-gettyimages-1287413765.jpg\"   width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Queen greets the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at Royal Ascot in 2018\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" class=\"image he-image\"\/>\u00a9 Getty ImagesThe Sussexes were a topic of conversation at HELLO!&#8217;s live podcast event<\/p>\n<p id=\"epVpt_AB74F-\" data-wc=\"16\">\u201cWhen Harry announced his engagement, everyone was thrilled. Then, gradually, there were blips that gained momentum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"esqmA8TE6Sqi\" data-wc=\"30\">One of these was an argument between Meghan and Harry and the Queen\u2019s dresser, Angela Kelly, over the tiara the Duchess had picked to wear to her wedding in 2018.<\/p>\n<p id=\"eTxfOGWoBhaD\" data-wc=\"40\">The bride-to-be wanted to borrow a specific priceless piece for trials with her hairdresser. But according to Robert, this was impossible, as Angela and her team were looking into the provenance of the diamonds, in case they caused any offence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"edmEnBjfamft\" data-wc=\"35\">\u201cAngela Kelly and the team were checking it, and all the time, Harry was on the phone saying: \u2018Where\u2019s the tiara? I need the tiara.\u2019 The Queen came out and said: \u2018It\u2019s not a toy!\u2019<\/p>\n<p id=\"e9-wBZy7PRj_\" data-wc=\"27\">\u201cShe couldn&#8217;t quite understand, as in the run-up to the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, the bride had used a toy tiara from Claire&#8217;s accessories.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"ewxpnbSKLemn\" data-wc=\"25\">\u201cIt\u2019s another example of what we charitably called a clash of cultures. When the Sussexes left for America, that was very sad for the Queen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"eTmbtcFYUfFL\" data-wc=\"22\">Robert also recalled that she knew the couple would not return, as they had taken their dogs with them to the US.<\/p>\n<p id=\"eKrshA4Qx5X9\" data-wc=\"34\">But despite the many challenges of her remarkable reign, Elizabeth was a natural on the throne \u2013 and was born to do the job. \u201cShe loved being Queen. She was very happy,&#8221; Robert Hardman said<\/p>\n<p id=\"eK_KAn9K6wyp\" data-wc=\"23\">\u201cI was particularly lucky to be allowed to read her father\u2019s war diaries; they are fascinating. She adored him. He was her mentor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"eM8B6cu5xemi\" data-wc=\"31\">\u201cWhen you understand him, I think you understand her; you see that dogged day-in, day-out side of things. You just get on with it because you have to. That\u2019s your duty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-xl\" id=\"e2tIeKE4Cc\" data-wc=\"4\">Highlights from the event<\/p>\n<p id=\"en0Pn8Soz4\" data-wc=\"136\">Emmy Griffiths said:\u00a0&#8220;My favourite moment of the episode was Robert Hardman discussing the Sussexes, and their exit from the royal family, because it was so interesting to have an insight into what the Queen actually thought and felt about that. At the time, there was so much speculation every single news outlet was covering it and reporting different things. So the fact that she still had that sense of humour during what was obviously a really challenging time in the monarchy, and her quip about how she knew they weren&#8217;t coming back because they&#8217;d taken the dogs, I think it just shows how she always maintained that sense of humour through every situation. And it was really interesting to see a little behind the curtain of what it was like for her during that time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"ev_oT9wU_n\" data-wc=\"73\">Andrea Caamano said:\u00a0&#8220;My highlight was meeting some of our loyal listeners, who have been with us since the beginning of the podcast, but also hearing them laugh and just enjoying themselves. I also loved meeting one of the listeners at the end who said to me that she&#8217;d met wonderful people today and that she&#8217;d made lots of new friends, which I think is 100% the point of all of these events.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"e8Ey4CZG5p\" data-wc=\"30\">Emily Nash said: &#8220;I really loved hearing Robert talk about how the late Queen managed herself as a young woman in a man&#8217;s world. I thought that was absolutely fascinating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"eCXQ1j97e5\" data-wc=\"64\">Sophie Vokes-Dudgeon said:\u00a0&#8220;I really enjoyed hearing the questions from the readers and what it was that they wanted to know. And one of the questions about the Queen and the corgis was particularly brilliant and resulted in a story about how the Queen used to keep a little silver tray of corgi biscuits on her dining table.
