The royal couple made stops in San Diego, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and even visited Yosemite National Park, heading north toward the conclusion of their visit in Seattle. (The Brits had hoped for sunny, warm weather and were disappointed to find cool, damp days in California.) On March 3, the royals were the guests of honor at a state dinner hosted by the Reagans at San Francisco\u2019s M.H. de Young Memorial Museum.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67713\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2026-0326-04-california03.jpg\" alt=\"Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh attend a dinner at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco during their American state visit on March 3, 1983 (White House Photographic Collection)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"795\"  \/>Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh attend a dinner at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco during their American state visit on March 3, 1983 (White House Photographic Collection)<\/p>\n<p>The guest list for the dinner was star-studded and varied: quarterback Joe Montana, actresses Mary Martin and Shirley Temple Black, Masterpiece Theatre host Alastair Cooke, baseball greats Willie Mays and Joe DiMaggio, Peanuts cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, and Star Wars director George Lucas. All watched as the Queen delivered remarks from the dais, perching a pair of reading glasses on the end of her nose. She drew loud laughter from the President when she quipped, \u201cI knew before we came that we have exported many of our traditions to the United States. The San Francisco Examiner\u00a0reported that the dress was a \u201cgossamer gown\u201d of \u201cantique ivory silk with [a] fitted bodice and ruffled sleeve and shoulder detailing.\u201d They reported that one guest sighed, \u201cA fairy princess gown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dress, and indeed the Queen\u2019s entire wardrobe for the trip, drew mixed reviews from California fashionistas. She wore one of the most regal tiaras in her collection: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecourtjeweller.com\/2019\/07\/the-vladimir-tiara.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Vladimir Tiara<\/a>, made for the Romanovs in the nineteenth century and acquired in the twentieth by her grandmother, Queen Mary. The jewel was a gift from a committee of aristocratic women to commemorate Victoria\u2019s Golden Jubilee in the spring of 1887.
