{"id":195450,"date":"2026-04-13T14:41:34","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T14:41:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/195450\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T14:41:34","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T14:41:34","slug":"brooklyn-photographers-turn-lens-on-black-artists-in-docuseries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/195450\/","title":{"rendered":"Brooklyn Photographers Turn Lens on Black Artists in Docuseries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Darkroom\u00a0Masters of Culture,&#8221; a documentary series on Black and brown photographers created by Russell Frederick and Anderson Zaca, is up for a Webby People&#8217;s Voice award. &#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>A docuseries by two Brooklyn photographers exploring printmaking and the lives of Black photographers has been nominated for a <a href=\"https:\/\/vote.webbyawards.com\/PublicVoting#\/2026\/video-film\/series-channels\/interview-talk-after-show?utm_source=ig&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_content=link_in_bio&amp;fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQMMjU2MjgxMDQwNTU4AAGnnpaDNy8xhJxay_vqr6F4K49Lg0gunBmVeLwTxOOfEhkMPon0cQRvc9v90cI_aem_ZA5WW3P9zjwme5SZnpTbOA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Webby People\u2019s Voice award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/thedarkroommasters.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Darkroom\u00a0Masters of Culture<\/a> was created from a desire to tell stories through the perspectives, lenses, and voices of some of the most underrecognized Black and brown photographers of our time, according to creators Russell Frederick and Anderson Zaca.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For too long, the rich legacy of Black photographers and artists has not received its proper respect, leaving many of this elite class unknown, the photographers said. In the series, seen on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allarts.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">All Arts<\/a>\/WNET\u00a0in 2025 and currently streaming on Apple TV and ROKU, the two photographers interview\u00a0various\u00a0colleagues in action to create\u00a0an intimate and authentic exploration of each photographer\u2019s mission, perspective on the industry, and the social and political importance of their work.<\/p>\n<p>The series shines the spotlight on artists including\u00a0Beuford Smith, Joseph Rodriguez, Adama Delphine Fawundu and Ozier Muhammad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel blessed to be in conversation with our friends, our mentors, and our contemporaries about the past and future of our art, the industry and the significance of our contributions to the cannon of photography,&#8221; Frederick and Zaca said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.russellfrederick.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Frederick,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bkreader.com\/featured-news\/facing-sight-loss-storied-bk-photographer-russell-frederick-fights-to-stay-in-the-city-he-loves-8742648\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who is facing vision loss<\/a>, has lived and worked in Bedford-Stuyvesant since 1989. He is known for his ability to capture the quiet moments of family,\u00a0love, dignity and everyday joy in the lives of Black and brown people across the city and beyond. <a href=\"https:\/\/andersonzaca.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zaca\u00a0<\/a>is a visual storyteller, and the creator of\u00a0several books and films.
