{"id":195580,"date":"2026-04-13T16:16:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T16:16:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/195580\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T16:16:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T16:16:37","slug":"knicks-guard-jose-alvarado-honored-in-brooklyn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/195580\/","title":{"rendered":"Knicks Guard Jose Alvarado Honored in Brooklyn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Williamsburg native, now a point guard for the New York Knicks, was celebrated by the community and received a Proclamation marking his return to New York City.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/therealgta\/?hl=en\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Jose Alvarado<\/a>, a point guard for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/knicks\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">New York Knicks<\/a>, was celebrated by the Brooklyn community on Saturday and received a Proclamation marking his return to New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarado, who grew up in the Berry Street Houses in Williamsburg, said he was just like all of the young basketball players who had gathered for his homecoming celebration at the Williamsburg Community Center, where he said he played a few games.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was just like ya&#8217;ll,&#8221; said Alvarado, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/knicks\/news\/new-york-knicks-acquire-jose-alvarado\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">joined the Knicks<\/a> in February after playing for the New Orleans Pelicans since 2021. &#8220;Keep your head up. Don&#8217;t let anyone tell you &#8216;You can&#8217;t.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alvarado spent the day signing autographs and taking photos with community members and joked with the crowd:\u00a0&#8220;I play in front of a lot of people but I&#8217;ve never felt so nervous until right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"performer-with-microphone-in-gymnasium-before-a-crowd\" id=\"file-4357269\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/performer-with-microphone-in-gymnasium-before-a-crowd.jpeg;w=960.jpeg\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nJose Alvarado, a Williamsburg native that now plays as a point guard for the New York Knicks, at the Williamsburg Community Center on April 11, 2026. Photo: Howard Weiss for BK Reader&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The celebration was hosted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklynbp.nyc.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso<\/a>, in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/grandsettlement.org\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Grand Street Settlement,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/jennifer-gutierrez\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Council Member Jennifer Guti\u00e9rrez<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/advocate.nyc.gov\/about\/the-public-advocate\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Public Advocate Jumaane Williams<\/a>.\u00a0More than 200 Brooklynites turned out to celebrate Alvarado, many of whom also received Knicks swag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStars are born in Brooklyn, and Jose Alvarado has long proven himself one. Now, Jose gets to shine for his hometown as a New York Knick, and I could not be prouder to welcome him back home,\u201d said Reynoso. \u201cBoth Jose and I are proud sons of the Southside of Williamsburg, and this celebration is all about showing the next generation of children from our neighborhood what\u2019s possible with the help of hard work and your community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"gymnasium-event-with-crowd-and-basketball-court\" id=\"file-4357267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gymnasium-event-with-crowd-and-basketball-court.jpeg;w=960.jpeg\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nThe crowd at Williamsburg Community Center on April 11, 2026. Photo: Howard Weiss for BK Reader&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Alvarado, who turned 28 on Sunday,\u00a0is showing the community&#8217;s young people what\u2019s possible, said\u00a0Robert Cordero, chief executive officer of Grand Street Settlement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s a Brooklyn homecoming for one of our own,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"person-drawing-on-another-persons-arm-with-a-marker\" id=\"file-4357338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/person-drawing-on-another-persons-arm-with-a-marker.jpeg;w=960.jpeg\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nJose Alvarado signs a child&#8217;s hoodie. .
