Their push comes as\u00a0Albany\u00a0has blown through the deadline for the state budget and as Mamdani has sought more money from the state as he faces\u00a0the challenge of balancing the city\u2019s books<\/a>\u00a0amidst a fiscal crisis.<\/p>\n \u201cWe write in support of higher taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations, and to urge you to stand strong in budget negotiations to protect New Yorkers who struggle the most, and the nonprofit sector that supports them,\u201d the 38 organizations, including the\u00a0Coalition for Asian American Children and Families, Make the Road NY and\u00a0Housing Works, wrote in a letter to State Senate Majority Leader\u00a0Andrea Stewart-Cousins\u00a0and Assembly Speaker\u00a0Carl Heastie on Monday.<\/p>\n The state budget is now two weeks late and is widely expected to come closer to the end of April.<\/p>\n Both chambers included the tax hikes in their One-House\u00a0budget proposals<\/a>\u2014the starting point for their formal negotiations with the governor on the state budget. But Hochul has remained adverse to a tax hike on the wealthy.<\/p>\n New York City\u00a0is currently facing a $5.4 billion budget gap, per\u00a0City Hall\u00a0estimates. Mamdani has put pressure on Hochul to help\u00a0balance the books<\/a>, warning that if she doesn\u2019t step in, the city would be forced to take more drastic actions like an unpopular property tax hike or cuts to vital services.<\/p>\n The organizations said they\u2019re fearful this state of play\u2014in addition to comments in February from the state\u2019s budget director on a need for limiting spending on social services\u2014might result in cuts to funding for nonprofits.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are concerned about the future of our social safety net during this fiscal crisis,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cIn the face of City and State budget challenges, non-profit service providers are all too often the first on the chopping block.\u201d<\/p>\n Mamdani said Friday he\u2019s been \u201cencouraged\u201d by the conversations around the state budget and that he wants to see it settled before he submits his next budget proposal.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0hopeful that\u00a0we\u2019ll\u00a0see those\u00a0conversations come to a place of a finalized agreement in the next few weeks before we head into our executive budget,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n Photo credit: Joshua Williams\/Unsplash<\/p>\n _______<\/p>\n \u00a92026 New York Daily News.
