The gathering also featured Lorraine Chambers Lewis, the President of <a href=\"https:\/\/foresthills.northwell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Long Island Jewish Forest Hills<\/a> (LIJFH), along with elected officials, political candidates and district office representatives to discuss local concerns.<\/p>\n<p>CB5, which represents the neighborhoods of Middle Village, <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/neighborhoods\/ridgewood\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ridgewood<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/neighborhoods\/maspeth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maspeth<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/neighborhoods\/glendale\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glendale<\/a>, introduced the new members: Melissa Garcia, Carmel Gorton, Matthew Mahoney, Edgar Mantel and Valeria Paz Reyes. This follows a record number of community board applicants across the borough \u2014 966 applications were received by <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/2026\/02\/bp-richards-inauguration-queens\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queens Borough President Donovan Richards<\/a> during the winter application period, <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/2026\/03\/bp-richards-community-board-applications\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as reported by QNS last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Long Island Jewish Hospital Forest Hills Presentation<\/p>\n<p>Lewis began her presentation to the forum by stating that LIJFH is \u201cone of the safest Queens hospitals,\u201d touting its A ratings from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leapfroggroup.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Leapfrog Group<\/a>, a patient safety watchdog group. She went on to describe the hospital\u2019s healthcare advancements, including the Robotic Surgery Center of Excellence, which offers high-tech care with small, highly recoverable incisions in soft-tissue procedures (e.g., urology, oncology, hernia repairs).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-606391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_8900.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>Photo by Paulina Albarracin<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-606389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_8891.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>Photo by Paulina Albarracin<\/p>\n<p>During her speech, Lewis thanked <a href=\"https:\/\/meng.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Congresswoman Grace Meng<\/a> \u2014 who was present in the audience and shared remarks earlier \u2014 for funding LIJFH to receive a makeover robot, a high-tech robot that performs orthopedic surgery and allows \u201cmore precise and smaller incisions\u201d alongside the surgeon. She further stated that LIJFH has become \u201cthe first baby-friendly\u201d hospital, designated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">World Health Organization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The presentation further described LIJFH as having \u201cmultiple physician practices and specialty locations in Queens,\u201d highlighting its access to Queens residents. Because of its dense population, Lewis called for more healthcare opportunities in the borough.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis also recollected on the following new locations that opened in 2025:\n<\/p>\n<p>Northwell Health at Downtown Flushing (136-17 39th Ave., Suite 1A)<br \/>\nNorthwell Health at <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/neighborhoods\/jackson-heights\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jackson Heights<\/a> (8221 Baxter Ave., 2nd Floor)<br \/>\nGarden OB\/GYN \u2013 Transitioned to Northwell (64-63 Austin St., #1A in <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/neighborhoods\/rego-park\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rego Park<\/a> and 112-41 Queens Blvd. in <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/neighborhoods\/forest-hills\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Forest Hills)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lastly, Lewis introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwellschoolofhealthsciences.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Northwell School of Health Sciences<\/a>, located at 53-16 Northern Blvd. in <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/neighborhoods\/woodside\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Woodside<\/a>, an educational institution that introduces students to healthcare careers. The President stated that \u201c95%\u201d of enrolled students are from Queens, showcasing a widespread interest in pursuing the vocation in the borough. For those interested, there are four career pathways students can pursue \u2014 Pre-Nursing, Medical Assisting, Behavioral and Mental Health and Healthcare Management. Each pathway offers the opportunity to earn college credit and participate in paid internships.<\/p>\n<p>Stancy Saji, the Program Manager at LIJFH, explained the LIJFH Community Advisory Board, a group of local leaders who strengthen connections with community members. Two new members were introduced: Heather Beers Dimitriadis and Racquel Chariah. A recruitment for members from Ridgewood, Maspeth and Middle Village will also commence in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Updates From Elected Officials<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nyassembly.gov\/mem\/Steven-Raga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Assembly Member Steven Raga<\/a>, who represents District 30, announced that the New York State Budget missed the April 1 deadline, prompting an extender bill to \u201ckeep our government from shutting down\u201d and will continue until \u201cnext Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raga went on to state that his office prioritizes investing taxpayer money \u201cback into the district.\u201d Assembly District 30 represents Woodside, <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/neighborhoods\/elmhurst\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elmhurst<\/a> and Maspeth. The representative said he will ensure continued funding for facilities like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maspethtownhall.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Maspeth Town Hall<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelp.net\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=1481212471&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADOIWc8DJVrdJV8ky87phPv8KLJ80&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwqPLOBhCiARIsAKRMPZqMRYD82klO9-AuzxP5tBSujnmCzLsB2UX2-5Bl7eyW-_EEl6Jf1N4aAg3KEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Selfhelp Maspeth Older Adult Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The representative is also prioritizing new legislation, including a tax credit for pet expenses (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2025\/A5340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Assembly Bill A5340<\/a>) \u2014 $150 for food expenses and \u201canother $300\u201d for veterinarian visits, as Raga explained. Continuing with his announcements, Raga shared details about a third annual Earth Day of Action, an environmental initiative to clean the streets, set for Saturday, April 25.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-606393\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_8905.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>Photo by Paulina Albarracin<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/senators\/joseph-p-addabbo-jr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr.<\/a> soon followed Raga, continuing the remarks made on the NYS Budget delay. He also spoke of an issue brought up by constituents that involves lowering of insurance premiums \u201cdue to auto insurance fraud,\u201d which Addabbo said should be addressed. In addition, Addabbo called for assurances from Mayor Zohran Mamdani that property taxes would not be raised. Addabbo further mentioned working out \u201cbetter benefits\u201d for Tier 6 workers.<\/p>\n<p>Addabbo also called for reconsideration of the proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/2026\/04\/cm-wong-bess-permits-review\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Battery Energy Storage System<\/a> (BESS) location at 64-30 69th Pl. in Middle Village, after speaking with the offices of Mayor Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul about an alternative site.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-606394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_8916.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>Photo by Paulina Albarracin<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/district-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Council Member Julie Won<\/a>, who represents District 30 (including parts of Maspeth due to redistricting), discussed a previous hearing concerning <a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/2026\/04\/sunnyside-yard-information-session\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sunnyside Yard<\/a>, a project whose revival in February was unexpected, as she claimed. The estimated cost is $21 billion, which can be received through \u201ccongressional appropriation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-606395\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_8925.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>Photo by Paulina Albarracin<br \/>\nPublic Forum<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samanthaforqueens.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Samantha Kattan<\/a>, a candidate for Assembly District 37, vouched for her platform to fight for stronger tenant protections and affordable housing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-606396\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_8930.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>Photo by Paulina Albarracin<\/p>\n<p>Carol Benovic-Bradley , the Library Chair, discussed upcoming cultural events, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ridgewoodjazzfest.com\/#Tour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ridgewood Jazz Fest<\/a> on multiple dates in April, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ridgewoodopenstudios.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ridgewood Open Studios<\/a> on Friday, May 8 and Library Appreciation Week from Sunday, April 19 to Saturday, April 25.<\/p>\n<p>MaryAnn Lattanzio, a board member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycapba.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Auxiliary Police Benevolent Association<\/a> (APBA), called for further protection of auxiliary police officers, a group of trained volunteer officers who prioritize neighborhood public safety. She thanked Addabbo for his efforts to enact a Class E felony, a penalty that would make attacks on on-duty auxiliary officers a punishable crime. She also mentioned the auxiliary force having to serve with expired bulletproof vests, which Lattanzio is discussing with <a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/district-30\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Council Member Phil Wong<\/a> \u2014 Wong has brought this issue to the attention of NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and will provide updates.<\/p>\n<p>Lattanzio is currently working with the NYPD to have the issue of radio encryption resolved with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.104cop.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">104th Precinct Civilian Observation Patrol<\/a> (G-COP).\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Brandon_Castro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Brendon Castro<\/a>, a candidate for Assembly District 30, described his campaign to \u201cgrow skills and jobs,\u201d build safe infrastructure and prioritize quality of life issues.<\/p>\n<p>Chairperson\u2019s Report<\/p>\n<p>Walter H. Sanchez, the Chairperson of CB5, held a motion to accept the Minutes of the meeting held on Wednesday, March 11, which all approved.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-606397\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_8932.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>Photo by Paulina Albarracin\n<\/p>\n<p>Regarding new liquor licenses, Gary Giordano, the District Manager of CB5, stated that <a href=\"https:\/\/elmanabany.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">El Manaba<\/a>, an Ecuadorian restaurant located at 341 St. Nicholas Ave. in Ridgewood, has been involved in \u201cmore than 200 311 complaints\u201d and previous reports of violent incidents. Giordano seeks to write a letter to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sla.ny.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York State Liquor Authority<\/a> after contacting the local precinct to determine whether their license should be renewed.<\/p>\n<p>Quite a few community board members have expressed concerns over the restaurant. Edward Lettau, a Middle Village resident and member of the Liquor License and Cannabis Committee, believed that a letter should be written to deny approval of a license renewal and to support the NYPD. A motion was set for Giordano to write said letter.<\/p>\n<p>Claire Collins, the Community Liaison of the Office of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.queensbp.nyc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Queens Borough President Donovan Richards<\/a>, announced an induction ceremony for newly selected community board members on Monday, April 20. Collins stated there were \u201c962 applicants,\u201d and \u201c367 applicants\u201d were appointed across 14 boards. Of 367, there were reportedly 115 new members \u2014 \u201cfour shy\u201d of last year\u2019s record.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-606399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_8940.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>Photo by Paulina Albarracin<br \/>\nDistrict Manager\u2019s Report<\/p>\n<p>Giordano shared of a \u201cgood turnout\u201d at the Memorial Day Parade in Ridgewood and Glendale last year, thanking the newer board members for their efforts. He described a banner for the community board to \u201cwalk behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The District Manager also noted that potholes in the district have \u201cgotten filled\u201d following a bitter winter. He also reported on some difficulties with park projects, specifically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycgovparks.org\/parks\/evergreen-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Evergreen Park<\/a>. For at least a year, there has been a debate between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dep\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Department of Environmental Protection<\/a> (DEP) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dep\/index.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York City Department of Parks &amp; Recreation<\/a> (NYC Parks) on the plan to control stormwater runoff at Evergreen Park. An agreement has not been reached as of press time.<\/p>\n<p>Committee Reports<\/p>\n<p>Sanchez confirmed that he and Giordano have met with Captain Joshua Rios, the NYPD Commanding Officer of the 104th Precinct, to discuss complaints about adults \u201ctaking over parks\u201d from kids and other similar issues. He also announced the next Executive Committee Meeting on Thursday, April 16.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-606398\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_8935.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Chairperson also recalled voting against NineDot Energy\u2019s proposed Middle Village battery site last month. He also confirmed receiving a phone call from NineDot Energy \u2014 the company wanted to meet with \u201ca few of us\u201d to gather \u201cthoughts and ideas\u201d of considerations to be made. About eight members from the Executive Committee and the Middle Village neighborhood spoke with NineDot Energy to discuss the conditions. Sanchez made it clear that the members did not indicate being in favor of the site.<\/p>\n<p>NineDot Energy was said to have wanted to put up a wall with \u201ctrees in front of it\u201d and a rooftop.
