From the outset, it was conceived as a place where life and death might coexist: as much for promenades and carriage rides as for mourning. At its height, it was said to be the state\u2019s second most popular tourist attraction, after Niagara Falls. Then-president, Richard Moylan, recognised it would need to move beyond memorialization, understanding its value as a cultural resource mirroring the city\u2019s history. Under his leadership, it was reopened to the public and reanimated by returning to its original premise: a place for the living.<\/p>\n<p>The cemetery, now operating as a nonprofit, hosts a wide range of events and activities, from birdwatching and performances to workshops and festivals, including those that engage with mortality itself. More than a threshold, it would orient visitors to Green-Wood\u2019s narratives and rich landscape, extending its reach to both the city at large and the surrounding Sunset Park community. \u2018The new centre,\u2019 says ARO principal Kim Yao, \u2018would support their mission of continuing their transition into a cultural organization.\u2019 Adds ARO principal Stephen Cassell, \u2018In some ways, the building and greenhouse are almost symbolic of this future.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:85.70%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/eYAF2qgXBqktaSkxNmjyqX.jpg\" alt=\"green-wood cemetery visitors centre brooklyn\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/eYAF2qgXBqktaSkxNmjyqX.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/eYAF2qgXBqktaSkxNmjyqX.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Rafael Gamo)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-a727639b-5451-4601-b1d6-4d3a6ef445a3\">For ARO, the challenge was one of calibration: how to build alongside a fragile historic structure without overwhelming it, while accommodating a multi-part programme. Working with restoration architect <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/wbmelvin.com\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/wbmelvin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Walter B. Melvin,<\/a> the team carefully rebuilt the greenhouse \u2013 replacing its glazing and much of its structural framing, and discreetly integrating life-safety, lighting and mechanical systems. A low, one-storey volume with a green roof contains the lobby and classroom and sits to one side, preserving views from Fifth Avenue and allowing the historic structure to read as an object in the round. Opposite, a two-storey wing pulls away to form a landscaped entry court by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mvvainc.com\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.mvvainc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates<\/a>, echoing the greenery of the cemetery beyond. This volume houses galleries for collections and rotating exhibitions, research space and offices, with the archive tucked below grade in a climate-controlled suite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.65%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/JVhoSUZLZ53fjX3oCXigtX.jpg\" alt=\"green-wood cemetery visitors centre brooklyn\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/JVhoSUZLZ53fjX3oCXigtX.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/JVhoSUZLZ53fjX3oCXigtX.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Rafael Gamo)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-befe9630-19ee-4dcd-859a-f26f2e4c8874\">Prioritising daylight and views, the architects resisted an all-glass solution. Instead, they clad the building with custom glazed terracotta\u2014its aubergine tone a contemporary counterpoint to the Upjohn gate\u2019s brownstone and a foil to the greenhouse\u2019s copper roof as it patinates.
