Filling the bench <\/p>\n
The race to replace the three Manhattan Supreme Court judicial vacancies come September is widening. I last reported that justices Cynthia Kern, Margaret Chan and Frank Perry were retiring and that Margaret Chan was moving up to the Appellate Division, 1st Dept., and that judges Chris Chin, Hasa Kingo, Shah Ally, and Ilana Marcus and Emily Morales-Minerva were reported out by the 2026 Civil Independent Judicial Screening Panel. As an incumbent, Morales-Minerva was reported out along with two other incumbent judges: Josh Hanshaft and Aija Tingiing. The race is on. Nominees will be decided at the Manhattan Democratic Judicial Convention this August. May the best judges win. Stay tuned.<\/p>\n

Special Evening at the Jewish Lawyers Guild Gala<\/p>\n
On March 24, at the Metropolitan Pavilion on W. 18th St. in Chelsea, the Jewish Lawyers Guild held its Annual Gala. They honored Judges Jeffrey S. Sunshine and Joseph E. Capella and presented a Special Award to the Family of Edan Alexander, the IDF Lone Soldier and Survivor and October 7 Hostage. It was a moving tribute. The award was accepted by Edan\u2019s mother, Yael Alexander. Judge Barbara R. Kapnick emceed the evening\u2019s event.<\/p>\n
East Side judge Michael L. Katz made the presentation of the Benjamin N. Cardozo Award to Hon. Jeffrey Sunshine, a longtime Kings County\/Brooklyn Supreme Court justice who is now the statewide judge for matrimonial matters. Deputy Chief Administrative Justice Adam Silvera (who hails from the LES) presented the Golda Meir Memorial Award to Bronx Supreme Court Justice Hon. Joseph Capella. Capella is Administrative Judge for Civil Matters, Supreme Court, Bronx County. Beyond the Judiciary, City Council Speaker Julie Menin presented proclamations from the NYC Council. Menin is an attorney and an UES councilmember.<\/p>\n
Making the evening especially memorable and touching was the presentation of a Special Award to the parents of Israeli Defense Force (IDF) soldier Edan Alexander, who was captured during the October 7, 2023, attacks and later freed. The Special Award was made by Avam Soloman Turkel, Chairperson of the Jewish Lawyers Guild, to Edan\u2019s mother, Yael Alexander.<\/p>\n
As always, it was a glorious Jewish Lawyers Guild gala evening. Lawyers, Judges, colleagues all mixed and mingled and enjoyed the lavish and delicious annual buffet – from franks and pastrami and what looked and tasted like mini-Peking duck wraps, and various pastas.
