King Willem-Alexander and Queen M\u00e1xima arrived in the United States this morning for a three-day working visit to the country, with stops in Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Miami.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe relations and the mutual transatlantic ties between the US and the Kingdom of the Netherlands are important for security and prosperity,\u201d the Royal House of the Netherlands noted<\/a> in an overview of the trip. \u201cThe working visit aims to underscore and strengthen the relationship and intensive cooperation in numerous fields at both the federal and state levels. The visit offers an opportunity, in the year that the US celebrates 250 years of independence, to reflect on the deep historical and cultural ties between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the US.\u201d<\/p>\n

After spending the day in Philadelphia, a visit which includes a meeting with the Governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, and First Lady Lori Shapiro and a tour of Independence Hall, the Dutch royals will head to Washington, DC. \u201cAt the invitation of President Trump, the Royal Couple will stay at the White House for dinner and an overnight stay. Prime Minister Jetten will also attend the dinner,\u201d according to the royal house.<\/p>\n

Last year, Trump stayed at Huis ten Bosch in The Hague<\/a>, marking the first time the Dutch royals hosted an American president for an overnight stay at their official residence.<\/p>\n

The reactions to their stay at the White House have been decidedly mixed in the Netherlands. The New York Times reported<\/a>, \u201cAmid the war in Iran, anxiety over the future of NATO, and continued wariness about the president\u2019s intentions for Greenland, the people of the Netherlands are greeting the trip with mixed reactions\u2026Opposition lawmakers have warned that the king and queen are on the wrong side of history<\/a>. There was a public petition<\/a> to call off the trip. And on the day that President Trump threatened to wipe out \u2018a whole civilization\u2019<\/a> in Iran, Mr. Jetten faced a volley of questions in the Dutch Senate about the visit.\u201d<\/p>\n
