BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Tuesday will bring an unsettled day with showers and thunderstorms developing throughout the afternoon and evening. While the overall severe weather threat is low, a few stronger storms are possible\u2014mainly south of Route 4 in Southern Vermont\u2014with strong gusty winds as the primary concern.<\/p>\n
What to Expect<\/p>\n
Most of the region will see showers and thunderstorms tomorrow, but not everyone will experience the same intensity. The atmosphere will be warm and moist especially to the south, with instability increasing through the afternoon and evening hours as heating develops. This will create an environment where thunderstorms can develop and potentially strengthen.<\/p>\n
The Storm Prediction Center has placed our area under a Marginal Risk for severe weather\u2014meaning the threat is low but not zero. The greatest potential for stronger storms is in Southern Vermont, particularly in Rutland and Windsor counties, where atmospheric conditions will be most favorable for development.<\/p>\n
Main Threat<\/p>\n
If stronger thunderstorms do develop, strong gusty winds exceeding 58 mph are the primary concern. Hail and tornadoes are not expected with this atmospheric setup. Heavy downpours are also possible with any storms that develop \u2013severe or not, especially given the moist air mass moving in.<\/p>\n
Timing<\/p>\n
Thunderstorms will be most likely during the late morning into the afternoon and evening hours on Tuesday. Keep an eye on conditions as the day progresses, and stay weather-aware especially if you\u2019re in Southern Vermont where stronger storms are more likely.<\/p>\n
