The intersection’s position straddling the county line also can prove difficult in crash total data points used by IDOT in traffic studies, officials have said. The group reconvened Monday morning, as well, Falaschetti said.

Kankakee Sheriff Mike Downey in a statement Monday acknowledged the long-standing dangers at the intersection of Route 1 and 12000 North along the Kankakee–Will County line, noting that it has been the site of numerous serious crashes over the years. He emphasized that the complexity of the intersection— spanning multiple law enforcement, fire protection, and roadway jurisdictions—has made solutions challenging to implement.

“However, this is a strong example of what can be accomplished when our state legislators work together with local government partners, first responders, and roadway authorities,” Downey said. “By collaborating across jurisdictions, we are making meaningful progress toward improving safety at this intersection. The planned addition of a stop sign and rumble strips is a positive step forward, and ultimately, it’s about doing everything we can to prevent future crashes and save lives.”

The Will County Sheriff’s Office on Monday said it’s hopeful that the traffic measures will help in reducing the number of crashes.

“The Will County Sheriff’s Office has been a part of several meetings over the last month or so regarding this intersection, due to the number of crashes there over the years,” said Will County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Elizabeth Matthews. “The WCSO, along with area elected officials, the Will County Dept. of Transportation (WCDOT) and the Illinois Department of Transportation, worked in conjunction to see what could be done to make this intersection safer. We hope that with this implementation of the four-way stop at the end of April and rumble strips—it will reduce the number of crashes that occur.”

Falaschetti thanked local legislators and elected officials for their role in making change happen.

“On behalf of the Beecher Fire Protection District, we extend our sincere appreciation to the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Representatives Thaddeus Jones and Jackie Haas, Illinois State Senators Elgie R. Sims Jr. and Napoleon B. Harris III, and Will County leadership for their continued commitment to improving roadway safety throughout our region,” he said.

While the changes are being made only in the interim, Falaschetti said studies will help guide officials to long-term solutions.

“We appreciate IDOT’s commitment to implementing these improvements on an expedited timeline, demonstrating both urgency and accountability,” Falaschetti said.

“We also recognize the continued progress toward a long-term solution at this intersection. The completion of preliminary engineering and environmental studies, along with advancement into Phase II engineering for the proposed modern roundabout, represents a critical step toward a permanent and highly effective safety improvement. We acknowledge the complexity of these projects and commend IDOT’s efforts to move forward toward a targeted 2028 contract letting.”

Falaschetti said the collaborative effort between state agencies, local leaders, and public safety officials “reflects a shared commitment to protecting the traveling public and strengthening infrastructure within our communities.

“The interim and long-term measures being implemented will have a meaningful and lasting impact on reducing serious traffic incidents and enhancing overall roadway safety. We thank our partners for their leadership, responsiveness, and continued collaboration, and we look forward to working together as this important project advances.”

Get more local news delivered straight to your inbox. Sign up for free Patch newsletters and alerts.

WILL COUNTY — Rumble strips are in place, and a much-needed four-way stop is coming soon to a…

[35
75,84,83,9,24,63
0":"post-196346","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-manhattan","8":"tag-manhattan","9":"tag-manhattan-headlines","10":"tag-manhattan-news","11":"tag-new-york","12":"tag-new-york-city","13":"tag-nyc
["GET
