An aspiring rapper who just had a song start to take off after years of husting was shot to death<\/a> by his 16-year-old stepson during an argument over smoking inside their Brooklyn NYCHA apartment, the Daily News has learned.<\/p>\n

Jamel Davis was shot in the upper body inside his home in NYCHA\u2019s Walt Whitman Houses<\/a> on Cumberland Walk near Carlton Ave. in Fort Greene about 10:50 a.m. Sunday, police said. His stepson is being sought by cops for questioning.<\/p>\n

Davis, 43, performed under the name Sinthoro Upper<\/a> and in recent weeks his new song \u201cSlidin\u201d<\/a> was starting to go viral.<\/a> The song has been gaining airplay on local hip hop stations and even soundtracked a recent Instagram reel from 50 Cent<\/a>, heartbroken friends said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was doing the music so long and they just put his music on the radio,\u201d said friend Anthony Mabry. \u201cHe was grinding all of his life \u2026 God finally gave him his blessing within the month of this happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

50 Cent even soundtracked a March 16 Instagram reel with \u201cSlidin.\u201d In a podcast interview posted just three weeks ago, Davis was thrilled by his newfound success<\/a>. \u201cI look on the phone and say, \u2018What, 50?\u2019\u201d he told the hosts of \u201cTalk Ya Talk.\u201d \u201cI said, \u2018What?!?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Now Davis won\u2019t get to see how far his song might go.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s devastating for the community because we were all rooting for him and he finally got his shot and now he was taken away,\u201d Mabry said. \u201cHe is 43 and people were doubting him, people saying, \u2018Pass the mic.\u2019 But he stayed with it. And he was finally getting that taste \u2014 and it\u2019s like, you took it from him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Medics rushed Davis to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital,<\/a> where he died.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s like a brother to me, my best friend,\u201d Mabry said. \u201cI\u2019m just so hurt, man. Whenever you saw him, you saw me.\u201d<\/p>\n

No arrests have been made as cops try to find the victim\u2019s stepson, who is wanted for questioning.<\/p>\n

Davis was shot during an argument with the stepson over smoking inside the apartment<\/a>, a police source told ABC 7 New York.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just crazy that someone you helped raise takes you out,\u201d said a friend who declined to give his name. \u201cWe are all just devastated.\u201d<\/p>\n

The victim helped organize basketball tournaments for kids in the neighborhood. On Monday, people gathered at a large memorial with dozens of candles just outside Fort Greene Park.<\/p>\n

\u201cKids came by his memorial and literally broke down and cried. The kids loved him. He just had a good connection with them,\u201d Mabry said. \u201cHe was a people person. Kids loved him, mothers loved him, grandmothers loved him. He just had a good heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

The victim helped his brother create a clothing line called \u201cPoverty,\u201d<\/a> named to acknowledge obstacles they overcame, friends said. Davis had two kids of his own.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was trying to be successful for his family,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cHe was a good dude, great dude.\u201d<\/p>\n
