Hochul\u2019s auto insurance scheme pretty closely (<a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/category\/issues-campaigns\/auto-insurance\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/category\/issues-campaigns\/auto-insurance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">click here to review our insights<\/a>). <\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve covered how Uber is fueling this battle. We\u2019ve covered how victims of crashes will likely suffer. We\u2019ve offered better ideas if the governor really wants to cut down on fraud and save money.<\/p>\n<p>And today, we\u2019re even letting MTA CEO Janno Lieber <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/04\/14\/janno-lieber-hochuls-insurance-plan-is-a-pro-transit-plan\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/04\/14\/janno-lieber-hochuls-insurance-plan-is-a-pro-transit-plan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offer his side of the story and critique<\/a> our coverage (we\u2019re big that way).<\/p>\n<p>But through it all, we\u2019ve never put in one handy place why we think car insurance premiums aren\u2019t too high, but too low.<\/p>\n<p>So join me for the latest episode of my new series \u201cOld Man Vertical,\u201d as I highlight 11 examples of driver behavior that contribute to the problem: drivers committing insurance fraud, drivers piloting massive SUVs, drivers illegally parking, drivers racking up speeding and red-light tickets, and, of course drivers who deface or cover their plates.<\/p>\n<p>All on one bike ride to work. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wOUtrd-Tirs&amp;t=1s\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wOUtrd-Tirs&amp;t=1s\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WCBS2<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>After the Times\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/13\/nyregion\/grand-army-plaza-prospect-park-brooklyn.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/13\/nyregion\/grand-army-plaza-prospect-park-brooklyn.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrongly headlined big scoop<\/a>, everyone got in on the coverage of Mayor Mamdani\u2019s plans for Grand Army Plaza. <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/04\/13\/mamdani-embraces-20-year-old-plan-to-connect-grand-army-plaza-to-prospect-park\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/04\/13\/mamdani-embraces-20-year-old-plan-to-connect-grand-army-plaza-to-prospect-park\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We pointed out<\/a> that the plan is ultimately old. Yes, a cop is quoted in the story as saying that congestion pricing is putting more people in the subway, but not that tolling drivers has suddenly led to an increase in crime. And the Post also wants you to believe that congestion pricing is causing there to be more homeless people in the subway (um, how many of the undomiciled people in the subway were commuting into the city by car and decided to stop driving and live in the subway to avoid a $9 toll?).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"584\" height=\"236\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/times-car-country.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-589029\" style=\"width:455px;height:auto\"  \/>My god, this is the lede of a story in a newspaper with \u201cNew York\u201d in the name.<\/p>\n<p>With just a glancing reference to public transit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/04\/13\/opinion\/affordable-car-cost.html?regi_id=6722717&amp;template_id=744&amp;tracking_id=biza-LGsq5tChx0iifTm&amp;user_id=098df543d9afdd875218936425f32389\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2026\/04\/13\/opinion\/affordable-car-cost.html?regi_id=6722717&amp;template_id=744&amp;tracking_id=biza-LGsq5tChx0iifTm&amp;user_id=098df543d9afdd875218936425f32389\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the \u201cNew York\u201d Times once again<\/a> put the needs of car users ahead of the Public Good: Why is the Paper of Record not a stronger advocate for massive investment in public transit, which is a tool for equity? Instead, the paper consistently carries Big Car\u2019s water by simply advocating for tweaks on a failed status quo \u2014\u00a0in this case, reducing the costs of cars. It is true that cars are a debt sentence for many Americans, but the solution is for powerful institutions, like the Times, to push public officials to fix the underlying problem: car dependency!<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cWar on Cars\u201d podcast book, \u201cLife After Cars,\u201d is so good that even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jalopnik.com\/2144859\/life-after-cars-book-review\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.jalopnik.com\/2144859\/life-after-cars-book-review\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jalopnik<\/a> reviewed it.
