Times Square has basically had one job for over a hundred years: drop the ball on New Year\u2019s Eve. And it\u2019s been that way since 1907 \u2026 until now.<\/p>\n

The Ball has dropped every New Year\u2019s Eve through world wars, the Great Depression, a global pandemic, and just about everything else in modern history. It has always come down at midnight on December 31st.<\/p>\n However, on July 3, 2026, the Times Square Ball will descend just before midnight to kick off Independence Day, which will mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.<\/p>\n The Night Before the Big Birthday<\/p>\n Using the same logic as New Year\u2019s Eve, the ball drops right before midnight, and when it hits the bottom, it\u2019s officially July 4th. Only this time, it\u2019s a big two hundred and fifty year birthday instead of a new year.<\/p>\n Together, the bipartisan U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission and its nonprofit partner, America250.org<\/a>, Inc., are working to plan how to celebrate the nation\u2019s history and mark the anniversary in a meaningful way. A second ball drop in Times Square is one exciting way to do it.<\/p>\n We were given a subtle hint a few months back. If you have a good memory, you might remember that back in January, right after the usual New Year\u2019s Eve countdown in 2025, the ball lit up again, in red, white, and blue, and rose back up over the \u201c2026\u201d sign. Then came the confetti and Ray Charles singing \u201cAmerica the Beautiful.\u201d It was basically the kickoff to everything leading up to July.<\/p>\n What the Celebration Will Look Like<\/p>\n While final details are still being worked out, early plans suggest a production similar in scale to New Year\u2019s Eve:<\/p>\n A live midnight countdown in Times Square Organizers have emphasized that the July 3 event will serve as the official kickoff to a larger national celebration honoring America\u2019s founding.<\/p>\n There is no word yet about whether the July 3 celebration will include a traditional public gathering in Times Square, with planning still dependent on city coordination and permits.
