NEW YORK (WABC) — With the World Cup less than two months away, officials are preparing to welcome millions of soccer fans to our area.<\/p>\n
Some lawmakers in New York are pushing to open “entertainment zones” during games.<\/p>\n
The zones would be outdoor fan-fest parties and they want to loosen some laws governing alcohol use tied to them.<\/p>\n
Assemblyman Tony Simone says he has a plan for restaurants and bars that would be a game-changer.<\/p>\n
He’s calling for a passage of the Host Act.<\/p>\n
The goal is to create ‘sip and stroll entertainment’ zones in parts of the city like Chelsea from the beginning of June to the end of July. Establishments that already have an approved liquor license could expand alcohol service outdoors.<\/p>\n
Leaders say the region expects to see 1.2 million people in the NYC region for the World Cup games.<\/p>\n
The bill has mixed reactions from community members.<\/p>\n
“That sounds great, I’d welcome that. That’s why we live in New York, to have those fun things,” one resident said.<\/p>\n
“Saturday night here is a little bit wacky so to make it wackier would not be.. I think I like keep your drinking inside,” another resident said.<\/p>\n
The Assemblyman said businesses will only be considered if they have a good reputation with the community.<\/p>\n
“I’m confident working with the mayor and governor and all of these local leaders here that we will get it done for the World Cup,” Simone said.<\/p>\n
