{"id":197428,"date":"2026-04-14T22:16:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T22:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/197428\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T22:16:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T22:16:07","slug":"news-12-brooklyn-city-launches-proposal-to-eliminate-cars-on-section-of-grand-army-plaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/197428\/","title":{"rendered":"News 12 | Brooklyn | City Launches Proposal To Eliminate Cars On Section Of Grand Army Plaza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">New York City officials have launched a proposal to eliminate cars on a section of Grand Army Plaza, creating a direct path from the Soldiers&#8217; and Sailors&#8217; Memorial Archway directly to Prospect Park.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">As part of the plan, the roadways around the plaza would be converted from one-way streets to two-way streets.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">City officials say the goal is to make the space safer for cyclists and pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">The proposal also includes the idea of streamlining bus routes that pass through the roadway.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">News 12 <a data-rich-text-hyperlink=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/brooklyn.news12.com\/park-slope-residents-push-city-to-fix-dangerous-grand-army-plaza\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously reported<\/a> that people were concerned about the design of the plaza.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">Charlie Baker, a spokesperson for street safety advocacy group Transportation Alternatives, says the proposal would be a game-changer when it comes to safety.<\/p>\n<p data-rich-text-paragraph=\"true\">&#8220;We shouldn&#8217;t accept this status quo that there&#8217;s going to be so many lanes of speeding traffic right next to hundreds of pedestrians who are all trying to cross the street and don&#8217;t even have enough space to do so. Everybody is just trying to get to the park.
