Riley County EMS transported two people to Via Christi Hospital Tuesday morning after Manhattan Fire Department crews responded to a fire at 509 Pierre St.<\/p>\n
MFD crews dispatched at 6:13 a.m. and arrived at the scene of a two-story house with smoke and flames seen from the second floor unit. Before their arrival, a passerby put up a ladder, climbed onto the roof of the porch and helped one person out of a second-floor window and onto the porch roof with them. Both people were able to descend from the roof via an MFD ladder raised by the driver of one fire truck.<\/p>\n
Firefighters then entered the building to search for another occupant reported to be trapped inside. They found the person unconscious on the second floor and quickly removed them from the building.<\/p>\n
The fire reached a second alarm before firefighters contained it within 15 minutes. A total of 18 firefighters responded on 6 fire apparatuses, with the last units clearing at around 8 a.m.<\/p>\n
Two additional residents escaped from the first-floor unit before the fire department arrived. The first-floor occupants and the passerby who brought a ladder were uninjured. Riley County Animal Control transported one dog to Kansas State Vet Med for treatment, and two dogs and one cat died in the fire.<\/p>\n
MFD representatives said the loss is estimated at $50,000 for contents and $75,000 for the two-unit structure. The owner is listed as Helena Dace of Andover, Kansas.<\/p>\n
The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
