{"id":197456,"date":"2026-04-14T22:41:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T22:41:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/197456\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T22:41:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T22:41:15","slug":"72nd-st-crosstown-bike-lane-proposed-for-manhattan-by-mamdani-admin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/197456\/","title":{"rendered":"72nd St. crosstown bike lane proposed for Manhattan by Mamdani admin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Manhattan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/dot\/downloads\/pdf\/nyc-bike-map-2024.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cyclists could soon have a major thoroughfare<\/a> between the Upper East Side and Upper West Side, the Mamdani administration announced late Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The city Department of Transportation is proposing the construction of a two-way protected bike lane along the length of 72nd St., according to a plan presented to Manhattan Community Board No. 7 on the Upper West Side Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCreating a protected, two-way bike lane on 72nd St. will finally deliver a safe, seamless, crosstown connection between the Hudson River Greenway, Central Park and the East Side Greenway \u2014 filling a major gap in Manhattan\u2019s cycling network,\u201d Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn said in a statement. \u201cThis proposal reflects our commitment to safer streets and meets the growing demand for cycling, making it easier for New Yorkers of all ages and abilities to get across Manhattan safely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Traffic is pictured at W. 72nd St. and Amsterdam Ave. in Manhattan. (Shutterstock)<\/p>\n<p>If constructed, the proposed bike lane would consist of two parts, one on either side of Central Park, each connecting to the <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.centralparknyc.org\/pdfs\/maps\/Central_Park_Bike_Map.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Park Drives at 72nd St<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A western portion would carry two lanes of bicycle traffic \u2014 one going westbound and one eastbound \u2014 along the northern curb of W. 72nd St. between Riverside Drive and Central Park West. Cyclists would be protected from moving car traffic by a lane of parked cars.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Traffic moves along W. 72nd St. in Manhattan.
